Digital Differentiation Technology is a tool that can be used to help teachers facilitate learning experiences that address the diverse learning needs of all students and help them develop 21st Century Skills. At it's most basic level, digital tools can be used to help students find, understand and use information. When combined with student-driven learning experiences fueled by Essential Questions offering flexible learning paths, it can be the ticket to success. There have been many school reform trends over the past few years: student response systems, video games for math, mobile phones for learning—but none have completely transformed the notion of learning like the flipped classroom. Flipped learning [2], in essence, turns the idea of traditional classroom instruction on its head by asking students to watch videos of teacher lectures for homework, then apply the lesson with the teacher in the classroom. Using this method, proponents say, teachers have the opportunity to help students learn as individuals, and students can learn concepts more quickly. The first thing you need is electronics. Another piece of hardware is a scanner, especially one that has document feed capabilities (vs. a flatbed scanner). Apps and software are the next piece of the paperless puzzle. Once you have your services and apps set up, you can access your files and data anywhere. You can do almost everything online now, including banking. If you don't have ready access to a mobile device, but spend most of your time near a computer, you can always print out your calendar/schedule for the week, along with your to do list and space for notes. 1 page of paper or so per week is better than tons of paper. 5 Best Practices for FC Ok, I'll be honest. I get very nervous when I hear education reformists and politicians tout how "incredible" the flipped-classroom model, or how it will "solve" many of the problems of education. It doesn't solve anything. It fosters the "guide on the side" mentality and role, rather than that of the "sage of the stage." It also creates the opportunity for differentiated roles to meet the needs of students through a variety of instructional activities. 1) Need to Know How are you creating a need to know the content that is recorded? 2) Engaging Models One of the best way to create the "need to know" is to use a pedagogical model that demands this. 3) Technology What technology do you have to support the flipped classroom? 4) Reflection Every time you have students watch a video, just like you would with any instructional activity, you must build in reflective activities to have students think about what they learned, how it will help them, its relevance, and more. 5) Time and Place
khan academy • ESL Techies Why the blended learning model is a good choice One of the latest trends in the education world is blended learning. So what is blended learning and how can it help English Language Learners? The term blended learning has been used in education for many years. In a flipped learning environment, the traditional format of in-class lectures followed by at-home student assignments is turned around or “flipped”. Another objective of this individualized approach is to empower students to direct their own learning by coming to class prepared to ask questions and problem solve with their peers after viewing the subject matter on their own. For English language learners the model has some obvious advantages. The next day, teachers can spend less time lecturing in the front of the room (a la “chalk and talk”) and have more time to spend engaged with students, giving more personalized instruction, while the students use class time to complete tasks alone or collaboratively.
