Splashing Paint. For the last two weeks I have been busy conducting a workshop looking at selecting, manipulating and extracting the most from a painting subject.
It was a lot of fun, but we worked hard – doing a couple of paintings each day and squeezing in a few critique sessions, where we examined everybodys work and discussed various problems and solutions. It is always a pleasure meeting new students and catching up with students from previous workshops. One of our new students for the second week was Carol and her assistant, Kim. What an inspiring lady – taking up watercolor a couple of years ago after a severe car accident ended her career as a lawyer and left her a quadriplegic. Forgetting about her disability, the standard of her paintings is excellent, but to see how she has overcome so many physical hurdles to produce the work she does is just amazing.

While “regular” colored pencils are fine in a pinch, water-soluable pencils play “two-fer”: you can use them as both a pencil AND as a watercolor paint. Recently, the nice folks at Derwent (in the UK, no less!) Sent me a set of their Inktense Pencils- as they say, can be “used to create a diverse range of art from Japanese Manga to vibrant silk painting; traditional watercolours to stunning botanical illustrations.” I thought, sure! There are times I just want to hug the internet, and say “I love you Internet! “. Google, that monolithic giant of search, advertising, maps, stats and online software, whose offerings and initiatives have ranged from the amazing (search, maps) to the not-so wonderful (privacy issues), has spun off a new initiative for which I will forgive most of their transgressions.
Google on Monday unveiled a new feature called Google Art Project that is nothing short of wonderful and amazing, and, if Google’s history is any indication, stands to become even more wonderful and amazing as time goes on. ") Recently I received a question that concerns an earlier image I posted awhile back in the article, The Anatomy of Light on Form: Part II. Here is the image: The question centers around how the use of a sphere, an object so very different from the complex forms of the cast, can help us to better understand how the light on this complex form (or other forms) works. And ultimately how we might utilize this knowledge to assist us in determining values and rendering. Past Webisodes. Video. Organic Matters. Michael Harding.
