I've been wanting to host monthly theme parties (an excuse to wear fancy dresses, I suppose) for a couple of years now, and we finally pulled one off! It was a lot of work, but it was just so much fun! So if you think you'd like to throw one too, I'll give you the 411 on how to do it... First we started out with decorations...handmade pom poms (this tutorial was good and made us laugh), advertisements from the late 50's/early 60's , streamers, Christmas lights (maybe not so period appropriate, but nice nonetheless!)
, and vintage Life Magazines and books strewn around the coffee table and side tables. Next is one of the most crucial steps to creating an authentic "Mad Men" atmosphere...the booze. Next up...cigarettes! We also wanted to be fabulous hosts, so we spent some time the past week hunting around for quirky books published in the late 50's. A Mad Hen’s Party. I’m a HUGE fan of the TV series MadMen, so when it came to choosing what to do for my hen’s party I knew straight away that it was a perfect opportunity for an excuse to get dolled up … MadMen style!
So I hit the vintage and second hand shops searching for the perfect outfit, I found it a the Bells Belles Vintage shop in Castlemaine, Victoria. Although the skirt of the dress was already rather full, I wanted it fuller – and I was able to get a vintage tulle petty coat at Bells Belles too. I also spent weeks practising how to put on the 1950s style makeup and how to get my hairstyle right. I was REALLY happy with how the whole outfit came together. And it was fantastic to see my friends put in lots of effort in getting their outfits together too. For the actual hen’s party, I invited friends over to my place for a french cooking class organised by Cassis Events with Pierrick Boyer from Le Petit Gateau and afternoon tea. I wanted to do something beyond the typical veggie tray/ boring old games so common at showers. The shower was all about the details, and I must give credit to my super creative and thrift-store loving Aunt, and Jackie’s wonderful MOH for really being the brains behind the operation. " The moment her daughter told her about it, she volunteered to shoot it. And thank gawd she did because it looked amazing. The centerpieces kill me! Simple flowers next to a framed pinup photo really set up the whole sexy, girly, good-times mood. It looks like they asked everyone to bring a recipe to share with the bride, which is a perfect idea for this shower theme. Speaking of food, I love how they broke out all their mid-century-style home goods; like those old Coco Cola cups, the tiered serving tray, and the vintage Baking Soda boxes.
