" #googlemapshacks The advent of Google’s Geo Tools began in 2005 with Maps and Earth, followed by Street View in 2007. They have since become enormously more technologically advanced. Google’s virtual maps have little in common with classical analogue maps. The most significant difference is that Google’s maps are interactive – scrollable, searchable and zoomable. This Artist Is Hacking Google to Create Surreal Street View Art. I Know Where Your Cat Lives [cat f9304f5e84] Classic paintings of world cities meet Google Street View – in pictures. My Google Search History.
Albertine_meunier_all_my_google_search_history. Terrapattern.

MARCO CADIOLI. The revolving internet, constant dullaart 2010. Copyrights : Phil Thompson. Googler Turns Censored Images Into Meta Art. Google's Street View-style cameras are giving Googlers one more thing to ogle at.
That's right, not just the great outdoors — now you can scope out museums, too. With the Google Art Project, you can take a gallery or collection tour and peruse through more than 45,000 pieces of art by approximately 10,000 artists. Google's 15-lens camera contraptions — the ones used for Street View — are again to thank; however, because of certain copyright restrictions, some paintings are blurred.
One artist, Phil Thompson of the UK, has decided to flip the censorship on its head and create meta art out of the blurred boxes. Artist Turns the Google Art Project’s Blurry Canvases Into Hazy Abstract Paintings. “The internet provides a huge amount of material which otherwise would be unattainable to most people,” the artist told Wired.
“It has led to a lot of creativity — whether it is with memes or highly skilled photoshop jobs — everyone is now able to create and edit images.” Thompson has also dealt with copyright law in other projects dealing, like the “Getty Oil Paintings” project, from last year, in which he appropriated and republished images of paintings like Matisse‘s “The Dance,” from the Getty Images photo bank that have the “Getty Images” logo superimposed over them as a watermark to ward off unwanted usage. Thompson’s work consistently deals with the ways in which classic art forms can be reproduced, recycled, and distorted by technology, in manner that harkens back to the “Pictures” work for a New Aesthetic generation.
Google's Copyright Policy Spawns Mega-Meta Art From China. The Google Art Project allows art enthusiasts to visit distant museums online by scanning them with the same 15-lens camera rigs used by Google Street View.
Due to copyright restrictions, however, certain paintings needed to be blurred, just like faces are in GSV. British artist Phil Thompson was intrigued by the foggy interruptions. His project Copyrights is his exploration of Google’s grand, utopian exercise in bringing culture to the masses. For it, Thompson makes screen grabs of the blurred images in his browser window, sends them to the Dafen Oil Painting Village in China (a company that makes acrylic paintings of absolutely anything to order) and then exhibits those works in a gallery. Peter root - Digital Detritus Dover. I'm Google. I’m Google is an ongoing tumblr blog in which batches of images and videos that I cull from the internet are compiled into a long stream-of-consciousness.
Both the searching and arranging processes are done manually. The batches move seamlessly from one subject to the next based on similarities in form, composition, color, and theme. This results visually in a colorful grid that slowly changes as the viewer scrolls through it. Images of houses being demolished transition into images of buildings on fire, to forest fires, to billowing smoke, to geysers, to bursting fire hydrants, to fire hoses, to spools of thread. ‘I’m Google’ by Dina Kelberman: A Visual Exploration of Google Image Search. I’m Google (direct link) is an ongoing digital art project by Baltimore artist Dina Kelberman that documents digital patterns through non-artistic photography found on Google Image Search.
When I first started scrolling through her Tumblr I wasn’t quite sure what I was looking at: frame after frame of airplanes pouring orange fire retardant on fires which slowly morphed into an orange kayak and then an orange bridge and on and on until I realized every single image shared a slight visual characteristic with the image before it.
Via her artist statement: I’m Google is an ongoing tumblr blog in which batches of images and videos that I cull from the internet are compiled into a long stream-of-consciousness. I cannot urge you strongly enough to spend a few minutes scrolling through this impeccably curated collection of seemingly mundane photography that collectively creates something visually transcendent. August 2010, Google Earth view of 16 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn NY Paintings for Satellites I have an inclination to work with materials that have had an obvious life before I use them; it's a challenge and a pleasure to make something from nothing.
In the last year my practice has grown out of the studio in the form of large-scale rooftop paintings for Google Earth. This project uses materials from the waste stream (discarded house paint) to mark a physical presence in digital space. My work is generally concerned with human perception of current conditions; the Paintings for Satellites are specifically concerned with the effects of the digital on our physical bodies. All my work begins a series of rules derived from existing conditions.
As this project proliferates, it will take two forms - a community model, using local volunteers and paint from the waste stream and a design/build model, using solar-reflective paint, solar panels and green roofing contractors. Google – The first Google image for every word in the dictionary. Ben West and Felix Heyes, two artists and designers from London (UK), found out when they replaced the 21,000 words found in your everyday dictionary with whatever shows up first for each word in Google’s image search. Behold Google – a 1240 page behemoth of JPGs, GIFs and PNGs in alphabetical order. “We used two PHP scripts my brother Sam wrote for us,” says Ben about the process in an email.
“The first one takes a text list of dictionary words and downloads each image in sequence, and the second lays them out into columns and outputs a PDF.” The PDF was then printed into a beautiful book – handbound, thumb indexed pages held together in a marbled paper hardcover, the golden Google logo clearly indifferent to whatever internet horrors it may contain.

In an earlier era, travelers of all sorts depended on maps as an essential tool for navigation, from those who trekked The Silk Road in search of trade to those who drove across the country in Jack Kerouac fashion. Although oftentimes rendered in an artistic manner, encoding a painstaking amount of detail, these colorful webs of ocean, land, and ever-shifting territory lines served the utilitarian purpose of aiding travelers to navigate successfully from Point A to B.
