Elsewhere, he sees tents and marquees using new textiles that stay equally spotless with no intervention from a human cleaner. He is not the only one with his sights set on a future populated with objects that rarely if ever need washing: in Japan, technologists are developing self-deodorizing and disinfectant surfaces for bathrooms and hospitals. Computer graphic of a lotus leaf surface. A water drop on a lotus surface showing contact angles of approximately 147°. The lotus effect refers to the very high water repellence (superhydrophobicity) resulting in self-cleaning properties, as exhibited by the leaves of the lotus flower (Nelumbo).[1] Dirt particles are picked up by water droplets due to a complex micro- and nanoscopic architecture on the surface, which minimizes the droplet's adhesion to said surface.
