- The Washington Post. A Tory Wind of Change. Savor the moment.
For the first time in history, two women were the principals in the traditional "kissing hands upon appointment"—a ceremony in which the leader of the winning party is summoned to Buckingham Palace, there to be designated Prime Minister of Britain by the monarch and asked to form a government. The monarch, of course, was Queen Elizabeth II. The Prime Minister was Margaret Hilda Thatcher, 53, a grocer's daughter from the English Midlands, who last week led her Conservative Party to a decisive... Frankenstein and the gory gang: how the novel blazed a trail for high art horrors.
One stormy night in 1816, while staying at Lord Byron’s villa near Lake Geneva, an 18-year-old woman tossed and turned in the thunder-filled darkness.
Her name was Mary Shelley, and she was having a nightmare about a monster made from scraps of humans. Frankenstein, the novel Shelley would fabricate from her vision, is regarded as a fable of science gone wrong. Yet it is also a rumination about art. Victor Frankenstein, the monster’s creator, is as much sculptor as scientist. Like Pygmalion, the sculptor from Greek myth, he makes a body and it comes to life. In 1818 – the year Frankenstein was published, making this year its 200th anniversary – Lord Elgin’s haul of sculptures from the Parthenon in Athens had just been installed at the British Museum in London. It wasn’t that Frankenstein didn’t set out to create beauty. The mad experimenters of the Romantic age, the people who really did seem able to create life from dead things, were not scientists.
Ghosts in Shakespeare. John Mullan explains the position of ghosts in Elizabethan and Jacobean culture, and shows how the ghosts in Shakespeare's plays relate to and boldly depart from ghostly representations in other drama of the period.
Shakespeare was not the only dramatist of his day to put ghosts on the stage, yet the apparitions in his plays have effects on the living that are unparalleled elsewhere in Elizabethan and Jacobean drama. Collection of letters by codebreaker Alan Turing found in filing cabinet. A lost collection of nearly 150 letters from the codebreaker Alan Turing has been uncovered in an old filing cabinet at the University of Manchester.
The correspondence, which has not seen the light of day for at least 30 years, contains very little about Turing’s tortured personal life. It does, however, give an intriguing insight into his views on America. In response to an invitation to speak at a conference in the US in April 1953, Turing replied that he would rather not attend: “I would not like the journey, and I detest America.” The letter, sent to Donald Mackay, a physicist at King’s College London, does not give any further explanation for Turing’s forthright views on America, nor do these views feature in any of the other 147 letters discovered earlier this year. 16 Foods You Must Eat When You're in Scotland.

As part of their monthly Vital Signs series, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just issued a new report that looks at the best way to treat young children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, also known as ADHD.
ADHD is a biological disorder that causes hyperactivity, impulsivity and attention problems in children. Currently, there are two million children who are diagnosed with the disorder before the age of six and the vast majority of them are treated with medication. But new studies are providing strong evidence that not only is behavior therapy effective and that it works without the side effects of medication, it's the better first step. Amazon Kindle Oasis: Does the world want a £270 e-reader? It has a good claim to being the most daring and innovative technology company of the last 20 years.
It has launched at least two world-changing businesses - an online retailer of breathtaking scale and efficiency and a cloud computing service that has changed the way thousands of businesses work. But why on Earth is Amazon launching another Kindle, and who on Earth is going to pay £270 for it? That was what came into my head as a group of Amazon executives showed me their latest e-reader this week. I'd come to the warehouse in Hoxton - London's Hipster Central, where Amazon's fashion division is based - on the promise of learning about the tech firm's next giant leap forward. Foods derived from animals, whether eaten by candlelight or not, require more resources and cause more greenhouse gas emissions than plant-based foods do. Each year, humans kill 60 billion land animals for food – that’s about 7 million animals every hour.
All these animals produce massive amounts of waste, which releases powerful greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. The livestock sector is the single largest source of both methane and nitrous oxide, greenhouses gases that are 25 and 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide, respectively. . • Join the debate – email guardian.letters@theguardian.com. Apart from his choral works, Byrd is considered by many to be the first "genius" of the keyboard.
Paris hosts first Arab contemporary art biennial. "The attacks in Paris changed what we talk about," says Ella Graf, one of a group of German exchange students at the Institut du Monde Arabe (IMA), one of the Biennial's two principal venues. " The Biennial of Contemporary Arab World Photography, located principally in the IMA and the Maison Européene de la Photographie (MEP) is showing work by more than 50 artists who have worked in the Arab world since the turn of the millennium. Indeed, the future of human habitation, whether through choice or catastrophe, is often imagined (in popular culture at least) as being beyond Earth's orbit.
Sub-aquatic living still seems, perversely it could be argued, very alien. Not so for Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut.
