Clarendonhebden.co. Queen's Head, Finghall. Home. A Christmas break in Helmsley. After a festive getaway to Wales in 2013, we spent this Christmas a bit closer to home in the market town of Helmsley, North Yorkshire.
This pretty town is known for its 900-year-old castle, 100-year-old town hall and historic market square. But I think it must surely also hold some kind of record for the highest number of teashops per capita. Everywhere I turned there was an option for tea and cakes, which is basically my dream come true! We enjoyed a midnight service at All Saints Church on Christmas Eve and a fabulous seven-course dinner at the Feversham Arms Hotel on Christmas Day. Fancy a brew? But this being June, the month of Wimbledon and with a distinctly summery vibe in the air, I thought I’d go big on afternoon tea.
Because, is there anything more reassuringly English than sipping a cup of Earl Grey as you cheer Andy Murray on through the opening stages of the world’s most spectacular tennis tournament, only to disown him as Scottish when he loses in the semi-finals? We use a touch of wheat which helps deliver the lovely creamy head and lacing down the glass - just what you would expect from a proper Yorkshire beer! This year we will be making a donation to Herriot Hospice who provide care to terminally ill patients, who wish to remain at home, in the Hambleton and Richmondshire areas of North Yorkshire, covering approximately 1000 square miles.
Due to the large rural area that they cover they do not have a hospice building so the Hospice cares for patients and supports their families in their own homes. New tea supplier steams in to give rail passengers the perfect cuppa. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has appointed a new tea supplier for the 2011 season, having teamed up with The Mad Hatter Tea Company to provide its passengers with the perfect cuppa.
It’s the fist time that the two organisations have worked together and the move follows extensive testing of the tea which is a combination of Indian Assam tea and Kenyan Rooibos, providing a blend which is unique, rich in flavour whilst giving a generous blush of colour. To mark this ‘steamy’ collaboration, a Mad Hatters Tea Party was arranged to coincide with the February half-term. It was held on the platform at Grosmont Station on Monday 21 February at 12 noon, with the characters of Alice and the Mad Hatter having fun whilst awaiting the next train to Wonderland.
