Out of circulation: School librarians are in short supply

In the new millennium, school librarians are more likely to be found sitting behind a computer as they update the library Web page or create a wiki on genetically modified organisms. Or they might be seen holed up in the library computer lab as they lead students through tutorials on annotated bibliographies or Google docs. If adequately supported, school librarians—or teacher librarians, as they are called in California—are vital educational leaders on campus who update educators’ and students’ research skills in an era of ever-changing technology. Pearson School Board of Montreal decided to eliminate the jobs of all school librarians in their employ because of governement budget cuts. I was asked to give a statement about this at a recent board meeting: We send our children to school to learn to read, to write, to expand their minds, to give them a chance to lead successful happy lives. A primary school is a small milieu where for the first time, young children are exposed to the vast world outside of their homes. It is a place where they will learn skills that, for the most part, they will use throughout their lives. What has struck me in the hundreds of schools I have visited is the influence that a school library and a school librarian have on the children I meet. School Library Journal. From before eliminating positions is proposed to getting those jobs back when they’re gone, Elissa Malespina gives you a plan of attack.

As teachers across the country are walking out recently in a fight for higher pay and better school funding, librarians are fighting to keep their jobs. From Oakland to Dallas to Scranton, PA, and in large and small towns across the United States, school librarian positions are being eliminated at an alarming rate. When the jobs are cut, it is difficult to know what to do. Emotions are running high and fighting seems futile. Besides, says Elissa Malespina, it’s against the nature of most librarians to cause trouble. Now I see them differently. (Flickr / inkknife_2000) I used to think of the SAMR and TPACK — two technology integration models — kind of like a mountain. The higher you climbed the mountain, the better the mountain climber you were. As I dig deeper into the two models, I’m starting to find there’s a lot more nuance there than I realized. Using technology well, as common sense would tell you, has everything to do with your goal. A quick summary of the two models: The SAMR Model (Via hippasus.com) SAMR — It stands for four levels of technology integration in education: The TPACK Model (Wikimedia / Llennon) TPACK — It’s represented by three overlapping circles. When I first came across these two models, two things immediately came to mind: “Wow, how did I not learn about these sooner?” EDU Premium order. Sons of Technology - Google's Secret Menu.
