Space exploration is in some ways an exploration of what it means to be human. How much can a person give up? How much weirdness can they take? What happens to you when you can’t walk for a year? Have sex? I honestly can’t remember when Mary Roach’s name appeared on my radar but on the strength of lots of good reviews, I’d bought two of her books and put them in my TBR e-pile. When I saw a recent interview with Roach at Mental Floss, a light bulb clicked on.
What a fun and funny yet informative book. Some of this research is carried out in various government labs of different countries, some on the “Vomit Comet,” and some was done by the astronauts and cosmonauts in “runner-up” missions that predated the “one giant leap” taken by Neil Armstrong. ~Jayne AmazonBNSonyKoboAREBook DepositoryGoogle. Review published in the September/October 2010 issue of Orion magazine LIKE HER PREVIOUS BOOKS exploring cadavers, coitus, and the afterlife, Mary Roach’s Packing for Mars offers lots of taboo-busting fun, this time on the subject of space travel. If all those questions seem a little earthbound, that’s the point. All this fun aside, the book circles around an obvious question that has hung in the air at least since the space shuttle Columbia rained down in shards across the nation: is spaceflight worth it?
Interestingly, her answer is no. In the end, even as Roach makes her claim for continuing the space program, Packing for Mars draws our attention to Earth, and how well it answers our annoying, but persistent, needs. Guia-actividades-mejores-relatos-ciencia-ficcion.
