So for this post I've put together the instructions to make a very simple quilt, that will hopefully be just right for someone new to these things. Sanity warning: I think that what's intrinsically lovely about a homemade quilt is the love and care that has gone into making it, and once your family or friends are snuggled beneath one of your quilts any slight imperfections will only add to the charm, so do try not to become dispirited if perfectly aligned seams elude you at first.

Last year was a very stressful year for our family. My husband retired from the Air Force after serving 21 years. The rest of us packed up and headed west to Las Vegas. Considering I had difficulty finding a pattern for my mini 'x' quilt, I thought I'd share my process. Supplies needed: block fabric - 12 charm squares (each 5" square) contrasting backing fabric - 1/4 yard border fabric - 1/8 yard 1. But with all the hustle and bustle of Market, it was a pleasure to be able to take a moment to look at the quilts in the small but impressive World of Beauty exhibit which was a little island of calm amidst the busyness of Market business. One fun thing that happened was Bill and I were invited to attend a breakfast and presentation hosted by Olfa, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the rotary cutter. It was interesting to see the very first prototype and to learn how this indispensable tool has developed throughout the years. I use my rotary cutter all the time so I am very grateful that the rotary cutter exists to make quilting that much more fun and easy.

I personally enjoy measuring and cutting fabric, but welcomed the opportunity skip straight to the quilt design this time around. The instructions on the package stated “Randomly sew 20 squares together to make 1 strip. Make 14 strips.
