I have a quick and easy table topper to share with you that would make a great hostess gift or an added holiday touch to any table! I have always wanted to do something with the melon (or pumpkin seed) block and this little table topper fit the bill. It has some simple applique and some fun angles to keep it fresh. I used fabric from the Winter’s Lane Collection by Kate and Birdie Paper Co for Moda. This is one of my favorite holiday lines and I have a fat quarter of each piece in the collection! As often happens, choosing the fabrics I wanted to use took the most time. Beings a trivet is used in the kitchen, I thought a nice linen teapot would be perfect. When you glance at the template, you'll understand, but basically I found that cutting my fabric pieces 1 1/2" x the length of each triangle + 1" worked perfectly as I stitched my way around the "circle. " When it came time to bind those 60-degree corners, I did a little research, having had trouble with them in the past. This video was helpful, even though I still wasn't 100% happy with my results. Don't Call Me Betsy: Jungle Ave Mod Nine Patch - another free pattern! Remember my Mod Nine Patch quilt from eons ago? Okay, it was two years ago, but it feels like a lifetime ago :) When my sweet friend Sara Lawson told me she had designed a fabric line for Art Gallery and showed me some swatches a while back, I was equal parts super excited for her and just itching to make something with her new prints! The prints in real life most definitely did not disappoint. Rich colors, fun prints, and I absolutely adore the black and white NeighborHoods print. I will definitely be buying some serious yardage of that one :) As soon as I saw the prints in person, this quilt is what popped into my head - it's perfect for prints like hers, prints that aren't exactly small scale, that need some size to properly shine.
I had forgotten how quick this quilt is to put together, so the other thing I worked on with this finish is an update to the original free tutorial, adding several different size options as well as some new diagrams and such. The design was simple, but really effective. She couldn't quite remember how she had made it saying she cut it one way then did some sewing and the cut it again. So there on the spot I worked out the pattern and in a 2 for 1 special not only gave the class the insight how to make the quilt, but also inspired myself to finally cut into one of the layer cakes in my stash.
