BEIRUT, May 4, 2009 (MENASSAT)- Topping the list on the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)'s dishonor roll is Burma, where, according to the report, the military junta practices heavy censorship and imprisons bloggers for prolonged periods of time for posting critical material of the government on the Internet.
Online activist Maung Thura, known online as Zarganar, is currently serving a 59-year prison term for posting video footage of Cyclone Nargis in 2008 on his blog. In the report published on April 30, titled “10 Worst Countries to be a Blogger,” CPJ lists a number of states in the Middle East and Asia where Internet usage has increased and government oppression has grown in response. “Bloggers are at the vanguard of the information revolution and their numbers are expanding rapidly,” stated CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon in the report.
