Edutopia sur Twitter : 53 short and simple ways to check for student understanding: 9 Steps to Successfully Implementing the Common Core. The Common Core State Standards, which have been adopted by more than 40 states, are one of the most important reforms to American public education in decades. However, despite the many benefits of the Common Core, its bipartisan support, and the widespread adoption and integration into state plans to redesign their education systems, the success of the standards is in jeopardy. Several states are reconsidering their commitment to the Common Core standards and the aligned assessments. As a result of an uneven implementation process, parents are unfamiliar with the standards, and educators across the country have concerns that they have received inadequate support and have not been sufficiently engaged in the implementation process.

Further, many teachers are apprehensive about the use of student performance on the new assessments in teacher evaluation. These are all valid concerns, but the good news is that they can be addressed. Specifically, states and districts should: 9 Steps to Successfully Implementing the Common Core. William & Pérsida Himmele Lack of academic language can prevent students from progressing in most areas of schooling. In this post we present four key ways to support students in their academic language growth, so that they can more meaningfully engage with texts. 1) Modeling Think of all the words that you know and use. How did you come to know them? Most of your vocabulary came from being immersed in contexts where it was understood, through meaningful interactions with more linguistically proficient people. 2) Immersion When was the last time you learned a fancy new word?

Create an environment where students read. For example, see the works of authors like Kate DiCamillo and Cornelia Funke. 3) Interactions Total Participation Techniques (TPTs) refer to teaching techniques that provide teachers with evidence of active participation and cognitive engagement from all students at the same time. 4) Teaching Drs. Deep_Web. The Common Core State Standards: The Real Story. A new school year brings new challenges to boards of education, their staffs and their districts’ students. One of the major tasks facing schools in 2014-2015 involves the Common Core State Standards—but not the implementation of the standards themselves which, in fact, was scheduled to be completed last school year.

Instead, the task at hand involves debunking the inaccuracies and myths that have grown up around the concept. NJSBA has developed this web resource to help local school board members and administrators provide accurate information to their communities about the Common Core State Standards and what they will mean to our students and teachers. The webpage will be updated periodically. Standards are goals that express what we want our students to know and be able to do at each grade level and upon graduation. If we are serious about advancing the academic achievement of all of our students, the initiative should be viewed as a positive one. Sincerely, Lawrence S. By Dr. Common Core & Ed Tech. I recently read that 90% of the content found on the Internet was created in the last 4 years.

New material - text, images, video, and music - is available to us to access at a rapid rate. Ways to use it, repurpose it, and share it are growing too. New multimedia tools and social media networks are sprouting up on a regular basis. Even our old friends, like Facebook and Twitter, are coming up with new ways to add to the proliferation of information we see each day. Add to that what educators regard as a confusing Fair Use policy, and teachers are at times leery to jump into the pool of Web 2.0 creative opportunities for their students. Unfortunate, but necessary, as those who create work need to be protected from unscrupulous use of their creations. True, Fair Use is purposely contextual in application. Being we are in education (therefore, fall under Fair Use provisions) we have our own “magic checklist” to consider. Finding Common Core Passages Online.

Common Core, or as Arizona calls it, Arizona's College and Career Readiness Standards, states, To build a foundation for college and career readiness, students must read widely and deeply from among a broad range of high-quality, increasingly challenging literary and informational texts....By reading texts in history/social studies, science, and other disciplines, students build a foundation of knowledge in these fields that will also give them the background to be better readers in all content areas. Some school districts are purchasing "common-core aligned" curriculum to help their teachers find those complex texts in other disciplines. However, many school districts do not have funds for this. Teachers are left to search endlessly on the internet to find informational texts at their students' reading levels.

Until now..... ReadWorks.org is a non-profit website which offers high-interest passages and comprehension questions. The passages are fully-searchable. Vocabulary Lessons. Education Week. A few years ago, Tina Cheuk, a project manager for the Understanding Language initiative at Stanford University, woke up one morning, printed out several new sets of standards, and started cutting.

"I was frustrated," she said in a phone interview yesterday. Looking at the Common Core State Standards in English/language arts and math, along with the framework that would become the Next Generation Science Standards, she said, "I felt overwhelmed. And that was my full-time job looking at standards. " Cheuk, a former teacher, saw patterns in the standards and began organizing them accordingly.

She came up with this Venn diagram, which shows how the practice standards overlap (you can also find it, with a key, here): With the common standards, "there are changes in the content—it's deeper, more focused—but it's these practices I think that are going to move our students," Cheuk said. The diagram is not exactly new—it was last updated over a year ago. Welcome | New Jersey Educator Resource Exchange. 8 Characteristics of The 21st Century Teacher. The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy build on the best of existing standards and reflect the skills and knowledge students will need to succeed in college, career, and life. Understanding how the standards differ from previous standards—and the necessary shifts they call for—is essential to implementing the standards well. Regular practice with complex texts and their academic languageRather than focusing solely on the skills of reading and writing, the ELA/literacy standards highlight the growing complexity of the texts students must read to be ready for the demands of college, career, and life. The standards call for a staircase of increasing complexity so that all students are ready for the demands of college- and career-level reading no later than the end of high school. Decoding the Text Types, Part 2: Where Has... When I was in high school, I wrote a lot of expository essays.

I mean a lot of expository essays. Through these writing experiences, it became my impression that there were different kinds of expository essays, but that each pretty much had its own blueprint. Furthermore, I came to believe that these types were distinct, self-contained, and that they didn’t really mix with other writing forms. That’s what I was taught. Yet despite all my early work in expository writing, it wasn’t until I became an adult writer that I really came to understand what “expository” actually means.

According to Merriam-Webster, the word “expository” is “used to describe writing that is done to explain something.” The answer is neither. Although young children are not able to produce fully developed logical arguments, they develop a variety of methods to extend and elaborate their work by providing examples, offering reasons for their assertions, and explaining cause and effect. Social Media for Administrators. As I have done a lot of work with school administrators on why they should be using social media and some practical ways to use it within their schools, I wanted to compile some articles together that will help schools/organizations move forward.

They will be listed under two categories; the why and the how. The articles are listed below: The Why The Need for Courageous Leadership – If new ideas are going to happen and we are going to encourage risks, we need to take risks as well. Here is an example of a principal trying something new and tapping into the best resource in his school; his students. Humanizing Our Organizations Through Social Media – In this post, I share what many organizations are doing around the world and how it is important that in education, we get through our culture of fear and do what we can to connect with those that we serve.

The How. How to Balance Common Core Shifts and ELA Instruction - Katie Novak, Ed.D. Having the Common Core Standards led me to modify instruction in a number of ways. I’ll discuss the major changes based on the instructional shifts outlined for the Common Core ELA standards: Shift 1: Balancing (how cute is that elephant?) Informational & Literary TextShift 2: Knowledge in the Disciplines These requires students to learn about the world through many different varieties of text, rather than through teachers and literature. Shift 3: Staircase of Complexity: I started paying closer attention to Lexile scores, or the measure of text rigor when selecting literature. Shift 4: Text-based AnswersShift 5: Writing from Sources Before the Common Core, I would assign writing projects that were not based on text, especially when teaching narrative writing.

These have been included with each language arts checklist so that you don’t lose sight of your essential goals for teaching and learning. ***Please keep in mind that this checklist is more to be used as a system of checks and balances in your teaching for the year and not so much a “check off” sheet for these indicators to be checked and thought of as “done”.
