Outre l’air frisquet, les écharpes, et les délicieux fruits et légumes de l’automne, l’évolution des feuilles sur les branches est probablement le plus grand signe que nous arrivons à l’automne. Une feuille est verte à cause de la présence d’un groupe de pigments appelé chlorophylle. Quand la chlorophylle est abondante dans les cellules, le vert des molécules de chlorophylle domine et masque la couleur de tout autre pigment qui pourrait être présent dans la feuille. Ces pigments se décomposent progressivement à l’automne, révélant les nombreuses autres couleurs qui existent également dans les feuilles.
