Raleigh caprice. Caprice, with new bars and stem Due to the complete lack of carrying capacity on my wife’s refurbished Raleigh Caprice, I was asked to get a front basket for it.
The Rixen Kaul seemed well made and reasonably priced, with a clever quick release stem fitting – but Oh ! – what an ugly chunk of black plastic that “Klickfix” stem bracket is ! Otherwise very practical, the bracket as it comes is an unsuitable style for a classic bike such as this. the dreaded bracket. Raleigh Caprice Refurbishment #4 – It’s Only Original Once :
September 6, 2012 by petermc unfinished but not bad, hey ?
Since the last post the bike has been mostly reassembled – the frame has been spot-rust converted and clear coated with no attempt to hide any scratches. The wheels were scraped back and rust converted and the rims trued a little – I was surprised how rust free the hubs and spokes were compared with the dreadfully rusted rims – I can only assume that the original plating was not the highest grade. They are now rust free at least, and as it’s unlikely I will find a better set of this old redundant size rim any time soon, will have to stay mottled as they are. The front hub was overhauled, and the rear sturmey archer 3-hub speed merely cleaned externally and fed some light oil through the oiler cap. Raleigh Caprice Refurbishment 3 – The Steering Head : August 15, 2012 by petermc sea-green… After rubbing back for what seemed an eternity I have removed most of the overpaint from the frame, fork and guards.
Raleigh Caprice Refurbishment 2 – Front Wheel Disassembly : Progressing slowly I find it useful to have a few jobs going at once when restoring/preserving, as I can get tired of monotonous work.
So while having a break from the frame sanding I had a look at the wheels. I gave the wheels a spin and looked for warps first, to give me an idea how much truing is needed – the answer in this case is “a little”. some of the worst affected. Raleigh Caprice Refurbishment 1 – The Frame : Downtubes – the left one is original paint and the right partly sanded back This bike was purchased cheaply in run down condition and while appearing quite sound, it needs a service, some rust removal, and cosmetic detailing.
So I will start by disassembling the bike to find any potential issues and to properly clean and service the bearings and components. The grease is sure to be crusty and dry by now, but if the bearing races are sound it should be easy to get the bike working smoothly again. I would like to keep it looking original and don’t wish to spend a complete fortune on it, nor do I want it looking showroom new. Cyclehoop Bikeshelf. Trophy Bicycle Holder Bull Red. You will find some rare features not commonly found in todays bicycles, like hand polished rims and a lugged frame and fork, making this machine a treat for bike connoisseurs. However, you don't have to be a bicycle mechanic to ride this bike every day - there are no external dérailleurs, no adjustment knobs, and all Caferacers feature very clean cable routing.

Posted by Ray | 28 Oct 2013 | Comments (0) Last we heard from People People, we took a look at their 'invisible' speaker; the Stockholm-based design studio has since come out with several modern, minimal variations in highly competitive product categories, including headphones and a pocket watch. Their latest project is an update to yet another widely-used but largely undifferentiated product, the bicycle, and once again, People People strip the product to its essence and proceed to improve it with just a few signature details.
Taking inspiration from the iconic Kronan city bike—a workhorse despite its weight—the "Spiran" is "the sleeker and younger sibling of Kronan that moved into the city," and its name is a reference to that of its beloved predecessor: "Kronan is Swedish for 'Crown,' and Spiran means 'Scepter.'" We had the chance to talk to designer / People People co-founder Per Brickstad about the "Spiran": Frame Building Courses. With 1-to-1 tuition, using quality hand tools and jigs, you will be able to make a made-to-measure lugged steel frame.
Choose whether you would like a steel or carbon fork, the style of lugs and braze-ons and then, sometimes the hardest bit: choosing the colour. If you have ever made something, even the most simple of items, you probably know the great pleasure and pride that you had in using it or giving it to someone.
Reading this probably means that you like bikes and cycling, so how would you feel riding a bike on a frame that you made to a size and shape to fit you perfectly? Maybe you haven't made anything with your hands before. British frame manufacturers - London Fixed-gear and Single-speed. I thought I'd drag this from an answer I gave in another thread.
Basically, I was making a list of British frame builders, and realised that they're not just world class, but some are just downright exoticabiciclettasexia. NOTE: I have been biased in enboldening the manufacturers that make traditional, fancy-lugged frames. You can almost hear the BBC Proms..... Making custom designs and now a signature series available at Mosquito Bikes in London, Tom’s tiny workshop in Southampton, England has never known it so busy. Winning the ‘Best Road Bike’ category at the 2012 NAHMBS earlier this year has just gone to put Demon on the radar of the bike world globally and so I went down to sunny Hampshire to catch up with Tom and get to the heart of what he’s all about. For more on the subject, this month’s Peloton Magazine no 14 (out now) has a feature on the workshop tour I received when we hooked up recently.
Retrobike: Hi Tom, tell us, how’s business in 2012? Demon Frameworks takes custom builds to the next level. Tom Warmerdam’s steel bikes have garnered him an international reputation. Under the name Demon Frameworks, the Southampton-based builder designs his own lugs (traditional joining units for steel frames) meaning his bikes look completely unlike any others on the market.
As a Dutchman, cycling has always been part of Warmerdam’s life. He studied engineering at university although left as he wanted to spend more time making tangible items rather than sitting in an office. It was only when his grandfather, who was a cabinet maker, sadly passed away that Warmerdam finally brought the two interests together. Demon Frameworks - Bespoked Bristol 2012.
