However, there are a few common sizes that fit a good many of the pencils made. The easiest way to determine what size eraser you need for your mechanical pencil is to measure the diameter of your old eraser in millimeters. If the eraser is gone, take a measurement of the opening where the eraser goes. Rulers work fine for this, but if you have a caliper, it will work even better! That’s the reason why most collectors start doing their own repairs. So you buy a book, maybe some copies of the old repair manuals to figure out how to do things, a few sacs, maybe some vac diaphragms and dive in. There’s a way around that particular problem though, if you’re at all handy with tools. There is a whole host of repair tools that you can make with just a few simple hand tools, and maybe a power drill. When you take a pen apart, heat is your friend. The old pen repair people used an alcohol lamp to heat a pen to remove the section or heat down a feed for example. Removing the section when heated is the next step.
