Brief diversions may help employees improve work, study says. A University of Illinois professor says people don't need to feel guilty about checking personal e-mail, chatting with co-workers or addressing other minor distractions throughout the work day.
Brief diversions may actually help people concentrate and improve their performance on more important tasks, says Alejandro Lleras, who wrote a study on the topic for the journal Cognition. Lleras works at the university's Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology in Urbana. Lleras' research seems to contradict long-standing theories that attention is a finite resource that runs out after a lengthy period of focus. Attention is more like a gas tank that refills during short breaks from the task at hand, according to Lleras' study. A loss of attention is not the problem. "When you are distracted, it doesn't mean you aren't paying attention to anything," Lleras said.
Priests who meditate for hours don't concentrate solely on breathing or one object, he said.
The Art of Getting Started. This is my first blog for , and I've decided to begin at the beginning.
Like many writers, I dread the start of a new piece of work, or, to put it more accurately, I dread the of the start. To begin anything is to open myself up to the possibility of failure and disappointment, two things nobody enjoys very much. Perfectionism is, apparently, functional for some people. I would even say that sometimes it works for me: its time comes later on, though, at the editing stage, when a knack for spotting problems and a certain finicky to detail are actually quite useful for a writer. I put off writing this article (ironically, I know, and yes I know you’ll put off reading this article) by doing a bunch of smaller tasks, for example. They were less important and I knew it, but they were quick tasks and so easier than writing an article on a tough topic. Honestly, I know the solutions: clarify what task is most important, clear away everything but this more important task, clarify my motivations for this task, break it down into something smaller and easier if I feel difficulty. These aren’t hard solutions. But they don’t work unless you’re aware of what you’re doing. How to Beat Procrastination with Daily Training.
