Toy_take_apart.pdf. Build an Automaton. Oakland Discovery Center: Thumb Piano. Materials • 1x2'' wood • small Popsicle sticks, or plastic stirrers • 3/16 x 2'' inch machine screws or carriage bolts. • wing nuts Tools • small saw • drill and 3/16th bit • screw driver Constructing the Thumb Piano is very simple, cut the 1x2'' to length (5-8'') and then drill a hole with the correct sized bit centered and about an inch from the ends of both pieces.
Use the machine screws to hold the two piece loosely together. You can use 2 wing nuts or one regular nut and one wing nut. Insert the popsicle sticks with different lengths sticking out of the 1x2'' sandwich and tighten the nuts until the sticks don't sound buzzy when plucked. The same basic rule about tone that applied to the wind instruments applies to the Thumb Piano the longer the resonator in this case the sticks the lower the note it will produce. Here is another version using some plastic stir sticks we found: Sound Automata. Sound automata is a modified automata mechanism designed to make a series of sounds instead of animate a scene or character.
We've separated the material needed for the mechanism for the automata and the noise makers in order to make things clearer. While this a good starting place there is really no limitation on what material you can use especially on the sound making side. Oakland Discovery Center: Micro Automata. Materials: • Wide clean plastic cup or clear solo cup. • A straw • Skewers • Bottle caps • Foam core • Tape Tools: • Scissors • Hot glue gun • A wood screw • Phillips screw driver or pencil Automata meaning self operating machine typically consisted of a clockwork statue or scene and were first created centuries ago in Europe and Asia.
They were in many ways the direct ancestor of what became electro mechanical robots. For our purposes automata are a good way to explore machine's function of converting one form of energy and motion into another. They are also a way to teach simple mechanical problem solving skills. Make: DIY Projects, How-Tos, Electronics, Crafts and Ideas for Makers. Perhaps the most famous automaton, the fabled Turk, ended up being a clever hoax, not a true automaton.
To see an honest historical automaton, one needs to visit the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, where Maillardet’s Automaton is displayed. This automaton, built around 1800, is a masterpiece, able to write three poems and draw four drawings! Cardboard-Automata. 242.pdf. The Kinetic King's Home Page. I worked with Sprice and other artists in Detroit on July 15th-18th, creating the Incredible Science Machine, at the Michigan Science Center.
In March of 2015, I created a gadget for the Body and Machine exhibition with Jack Pavlik in Minneapolis. On March 31, 2015, I received my third Guinness World Record certificate for the stick bomb I detonated with students in Lakeview, Oregon, in August of 2014. On May 29th and 30th, I demonstrated kinetic art at the Maker's Faire at the State Fair Grounds. On February 11, Guinness World Records formally adjudicated the 17,822-stick stick bomb made in August in Lakeview, Oregon, as a new world record--whoo, hoo! In fulfillment of my Kickstarter project, The Artsy-Fortsy Project, I produced a cool video, Kinetic Ballet, which I put in the Public Domain. On October 18 and 19, 2014, I created several gadgets for the Home Improvement/Healthy Life Expo at the Convention Center in Minneapolis. Exploding Kinetic Art, aka Stick Bombs.
