The Brutality of Boyhood. The heated, reclining driver’s seat in my car is more comfortable than any chair in my house, which is nice because I spend a lot of time waiting in parking lots for one or the other of my two sons to emerge from baseball or soccer practice.
That’s where I was when I read, with my hand over my gaping mouth, of the aggravated rape of a ninth-grade boy, “Martin,” by his basketball teammates—rape with a pool cue. Martin’s recovery began with six days in the hospital and was followed by nine months of physical therapy, including learning how to walk again. Even with these facts not in question, the adults involved could not initially agree on a name for what had happened. Suicide Deaths and Education Reveal Growing Need for Male Gender Council. Most people assume that men and women are more accepting of sex differences that favor their own sex.
But, according to new research, both men and women tend to react less positively to scientific findings that show men outperforming women. The new study appears in the British Journal of Psychology. “A lot of my writing and research has been about the evolution of human sex differences, so I’m very aware of the many controversies sparked by claims about sex differences over the years,” said study author Steve Stewart-Williams (@SteveStuWill), an associate professor at the University of Nottingham Malaysia. “One thing I’ve noticed – I’m sure lots of people have – is that the controversies almost always center on claims that put men in a better light than women, rather than the reverse. After reading the article, the participants completed a questionnaire to gauge their attitudes about the findings.

One researcher said that the relationship might help explain the generally higher scores of men compared with women in tests that attempt to gauge talent for recognizing shapes and manipulating objects, an ability generally thought to be related to skill in mathematics and technical subjects. Women, on the other hand, usually outscore men on tests of verbal ability. Mental Rotation at 7 Years: Relations With Prenatal Testosterone Levels and Spatial Play Experiences - PubMed. Gender Gap In Spatial Skills Starts In Infancy, Psychologists Report. Men tend to perform better than women at tasks that require rotating an object mentally, studies have indicated.
Now, developmental psychologists at Pitzer College and UCLA have discovered that this type of spatial skill is present in infancy and can be found in boys as young as 5 months old. While women tend to be stronger verbally than men, many studies have shown that adult men have an advantage in the ability to imagine complex objects visually and to mentally rotate them. Does this advantage go back to infancy? "We found the answer is yes," said Scott P. Johnson, a UCLA professor of psychology and an expert in infant perception, brain development, cognition and learning. Achievement isn't why more men are majoring in physics, engineering and computer science. While some STEM majors have a one-to-one male-to-female ratio, physics, engineering and computer science (PECS) majors consistently have some of the largest gender imbalances among U.S. college majors—with about four men to every woman in the major. In a new study published today in the peer-reviewed research journal, Science, NYU researchers find that this disparity is not caused by higher math or science achievement among men.
On the contrary, the scholars found that men with very low high-school GPAs in math and science and very low SAT math scores were choosing these math-intensive majors just as often as women with much higher math and science achievement. "Physics, engineering and computer science fields are differentially attracting and retaining lower-achieving males, resulting in women being underrepresented in these majors but having higher demonstrated STEM competence and academic achievement," said Joseph R.

At work and at home, women are losing the 'thermostat war' Office ‘thermostat wars’ are framed as a battle of the sexes, with men preferring cooler temperatures and women preferring warmer climes. These battles aren’t without cause: Most offices set their thermostats to a temperature based on a 1966 formula specifically designed to keep 40-year-old men happy. The struggle extends to the home front, too. But when it comes to the household, it appears that only women feel like they are fighting a war on temperature, new research suggests.
In a study published in the journal PLOS ONE, researchers report that women are more likely to report engaging in conflict over the temperature at home, while men are significantly more likely to say they engage in agreements and compromises. “Thermostat dictator” These three types of interactions — agreements, compromises, and conflict — result in different thermostat choices. “For instance, a participant expressed she was feeling uncomfortable and asked her spouse if they could turn the heat up.
UCLA Anderson School of Management. Girls do a lot better than boys in the classroom, whether the measure is grades, disciplinary actions or graduation rates. So, over the course of 30 years, the percentage of U.S. women 26-to-28 years old who earned at least a bachelor’s degree rose from 21% (1980) to 30% (2000) to 36% (2010). Over that same period, the share of men with four-year degrees barely increased, from 25% to 28%. This reversal in the educational gender gap has left educators and parents to wonder: Why are boys falling behind in America?

"....throughout human history, while 80% of women have reproduced, only 40% of men have. Those men who couldn't compete, didn't get to have even a single wife, and thus didn't have children. So, what did those men do with their time? According to Henrich, Boyd and Richerson, it appears they got into lots of trouble." Hypergamy seems partly responsible for that. Other evidence of hypergamy is the numbers extracted from the OKCupid and Tinder sites that indicate that while men think half of women are below average women think 80% of men are below average. A clear statistical case of women judging men by appearance. The opposite is a common accusation of men. One of the obscure benefits for the 60% of men who haven't reproduced is that they're free to do some very reckless things. A few of those actions will turn out to be beneficial - but more because of random chance than because of planning. "When in absolute ignorance try anything," almost never works. But with enough tries, and enough failures and fatalities, something useful will turn up. It's random mutation on a sociological level. All that notwithstanding, the current mating arrangements in Western countries are thoroughly destructive. The advent of the pill and legal abortion led to a relaxation of the limits on sexuality, huge rise in unwed motherhood, and an accompanying decline in the rate of marriage. This is a particular problem for male children, and a further problem for the underclass. Social change has produced a cohort of men who are out there "trying anything." Aka whatever looks like it will lead to status. What look ike the easy routes, the only ones available, are often fatal or result in extended incarceration. One of the effects of all this, in the middle and the upper class, may be the male tendency not to couple up with this shrill generation of females. At least until after the women have begun to question the seductively simple indoctrinations of gender feminism. So men are marrying older - if at all. They have seen the effects of gender feminism on themselves, their friends, their relatives. Another one of the effects is the Men's Movement,is that men are talking to each other. Apparently one of the disturbing things about the Men's Movement is that men are communicating without supervision. They are working out their unease with the way things have been done... and working on themselves. There may be an anger stage which some of them will get past... with support from each other. This can allow t the kind mutual support that gender feminism attempts to give to women. It allows them not to be so dependent on their partner for mental and emotional health. I don't think sexbots will make much difference, but they will upset some women. – ctwii
Psmag. Biology Culture Ideology.
The speaker's position seems to be that the sexual revolution was a result of open birth control. Formerly we had the custom of illegal but tolerated abortions and a custom of the man marrying the woman he got pregnant. Now, after the revolution, single motherhood is not shameful and fewer men feel obligated to marry the mother of their child. The divorce rate is fairly level now but the single motherhood rate is way up and the marriage rate is way down. Feminists want this changed, But the speaker here points out the relentless biology of the situation, including the hypergamic drive of women resulting in their complaint of "no eligible men." Incidentally, it looks as though around four times as many women as men reproduce. Furthermore chimps and primitive societies operate in such a way that the highest ranking male (as ranked by the females) reproduce most. The lowest ranking males don't reproduce at all. A sort of semi-polygamy seems to be the norm among us higher primates. That is multiple mates for the high status males and nothing for the low status males. Feminists resent some of the changes brought on by the sexual revolution. Increased single motherhood, decreased marriage rate. They're trying to fix biology with ideology. You have to understand biology and use it as a starting place to work from. Change may be possible. Haranguing won't do it. To my mind our cultural fixation on one mate at a time for every man goes against biological reality which seems to require lots of mates for a few men and none for a substantial minority. The rest of the men are in between. – ctwii
