L’objectif du projet Nordesta est de préserver les ressources en eau par la reforestation des sources et des berges du fleuve São Francisco dans l’État du Minas Gerais au Brésil.
Il est mené par l’Association Nordesta qui s’occupe de toutes les étapes du projet, de la collecte à la germination de semences, jusqu’aux plantations et à la maintenance des arbres, le tout en collaboration avec les producteurs locaux. Dans la région agricole du Minas Gerais (café, élevage bovin), l’augmentation de la taille des exploitations agricoles et leur mécanisation ont entraîné le retrait des arbres au bord du fleuve Sao Francisco, entraînant érosion, pollutions des eaux et perte de biodiversité.
La plantation d’arbres en bordure du fleuve vise à préserver la qualité et la quantité des eaux disponibles, un enjeu majeur dans cette région où naît le troisième fleuve du pays.
