Tartarus. The Underworld zone of eternal torment, where the greatest sinners were punished for their transgressions.

Tartarus

The worst of these offenders were deemed to be those who had sinned against the gods themselves. The greatest crime of all was to abuse the gods' hospitality. All the more so since to be on familiar terms with the great deities was a particular favor, reserved for the elect. Thus the hero Bellerophon was guilty of the greatest presumption when, in his later years, he dared to ride the winged horse Pegasus to the very gates of Olympus. Apparently he imagined that his heroic conquest of the Chimaera qualified him automatically for admission to the company of the gods. Tantalus, on the other hand, was invited to share not just Zeus's table but the great god's secrets.

The fifty daughters of Danaus murdered their husbands on their wedding night, driving daggers into their hearts and chopping off their heads. The Theogony of Hesiod. Sacred-Texts Classics Hesiod Greek translated by Hugh G.

The Theogony of Hesiod

Evelyn-White (ll. 1-25) From the Heliconian Muses let us begin to sing, who hold the great and holy mount of Helicon, and dance on soft feet about the deep-blue spring and the altar of the almighty son of Cronos, and, when they have washed their tender bodies in Permessus or in the Horse's Spring or Olmeius, make their fair, lovely dances upon highest Helicon and move with vigorous feet. (ll. 26-28) `Shepherds of the wilderness, wretched things of shame, mere bellies, we know how to speak many false things as though they were true; but we know, when we will, to utter true things.' (ll. 36-52) Come thou, let us begin with the Muses who gladden the great spirit of their father Zeus in Olympus with their songs, telling of things that are and that shall be and that were aforetime with consenting voice. (ll. 104-115) Hail, children of Zeus! (ll. 167-169) So she said; but fear seized them all, and none of them uttered a word.

Creation Story. In the begining there was only chaos.

Creation Story

Then out of the void appeared Erebus, the unknowable place where death dwells, and Night. All else was empty, silent, endless, darkness. Then somehow Love was born bringing a start of order. From Love came Light and Day. Religion. Cassandra's murder Greek religion was a mixture of old Minoan beliefs, Central Asian gods that the Indo-Europeans brought to Greece, and West Asian ideas they got from their neighbors.

Religion

Like all of those people, people in ancient Greece believed that there were invisible, powerful gods and spirits that could control what happened to you. Most people also thought that you could control those gods and spirits through sacrifice, prayer, and living a good life. The most important spirits and gods were natural things like rain and how plants grew. If you controlled these successfully, you would have enough food, and if not, you might starve. In your own family, you prayed and sacrificed for a sick child, a safe trip, or success in a race or at school. Most people thought it mattered how you behaved, too - good people had good things happen to them, and bad things happened to bad people.
