Automatic monitoring of pest insects traps by Zigbee-based wireless networking of image sensors

At farm level it is routinely operated by repeated surveys by a human operator of adhesive traps, disseminated through the field, where insects remain stuck when attracted. This is a labor- and time-consuming activity, and it would be of great advantage for farmers to have an affordable system doing this task automatically. This paper illustrates a system based on a distributed imaging device operated through a wireless sensor network that is able to automatically acquire and transmit images of the trapping area to a remote host station.

The station evaluates the insect density evolution at different farm sites and produces an alarm when insect density goes over threshold. The network architecture consists of a master node hosted in a PC and a set of client nodes, spread in the fields, that act as monitoring stations. Why settle for your run-of-the-mill mousetrap when you can use a teched-out and unnecessarily intricate contraption that you might find in the lair of an old James Bond or Batman villain?

Mousetrap Gases Rodents, Texts You When It's Done

Developed by U.K. pest-control pros, Rentokil, the RADAR mouse extermination system is touted as the "smartest and most humane mousetrap ever" -- this from a company that opted to put the word "kill" in its name. The RADAR (that's "Rodent Activated Detention and Riddance Unit") is triggered by infrared sensors. When a little furry mouse wanders into the trap, the sensors shut the door then release a "measured dose" of carbon dioxide, which Rentokil says ends the rodent's life "quickly and humanely. " The fun part, though, is that after the deed is done the trap fires off a text message to inform you that you've got a mouse corpse to clean up when you return home. The RADAR is available now in the U.K., but requires a consultation from a technician for installation and pricing.

Case Studies - Rentokil turns to Wyless to catch Mice

Wyless and close partner, Radio Tech were asked to assist the Pest Control division of Rentokil which had been looking at methods for measuring the effectiveness of its mice/rat baiting programs. Rentokil had previously operated traps in numerous locations that had to be manually set and routinely inspected by Rentokil staff. This process was very inefficient and expensive. What was needed was a trap that not only humanely killed any mice that escaped other prevention programs, but that informed Rentokil staff in a very cost effective way immediately any traps were activated.

Wyless close partner, Radio-Tech – World leader in bespoke design and supply of wireless solutions, helped Rentokil design a mouse trap that is activated by the slightest touch on a pressure pad.
