En un álbum ilustrado, la clave de que haya historias bien contadas o mal explicadas reside en su narrativa visual.
Es la parte más importante pero también la más difícil. Para que funcione, debes trabajarla bien. El storyboard o guión gráfico hace referencia al proceso de planificación. Se utiliza para desarrollar la historia en 12 o más imágenes de manera esquemática. Este proceso permite ver de un sólo vistazo la narrativa y comprobar si el libro funciona. Antes de abordar el storyboard, debemos recordar las partes de un álbum ilustrado: El formato más común es el de 32 páginas. De esas 32 páginas, 2 se destinan a la cubierta y contracubierta, 4 a las guardas (delanteras y traseras), 2 a los créditos y portadilla, y las 24 restantes, a la tripa. Empieza por un storyboard poco detallado. Dibuja 12 rectángulos o utiliza una plantilla como ésta y comienza a esbozar las composiciones de cada página.
