Mission Statement The European Commission funded ERPANET Project will establish an expandable European Consortium, which will make viable and visible information, best practice and skills development in the area of digital preservation of cultural heritage and scientific objects.
ERPANET will bring together memory organisations (museums, libraries and archives), ICT and software industry, research institutions, government organisations (including local ones), entertainment and creative industries, and commercial sectors (including for example pharmaceuticals, petro-chemical, and financial). The dominant feature of ERPANET will be the provision of a virtual clearinghouse and knowledge-base on state-of-the-art developments in digital preservation and the transfer of that expertise among individuals and institutions.

Il associe le ministère de la Culture, la Bibliothèque nationale de France (BNF), le Syndicat national de l'édition et la Société des gens de lettres. Il prévoit la numérisation sur cinq ans, et par la BNF, de 500 000 livres épuisés du XXème siècle - mais toujours sous droits. Le financement du projet de numérisation s’effectuera grâce aux fonds alloués (750 millions d’euros) dans le cadre du grand emprunt. Les ouvrages épuisés numérisés seront conservés par la BNF.
Une version électronique, de quelques pages seulement et accessible librement par les internautes, sera par ailleurs mise en ligne sur sa bibliothèque numérique Gallica. Des modalités financières et économiques toujours à définir Mais pour se procurer le livre électronique dans son intégralité, l’internaute sera redirigé vers des sites marchands. Cet accord autour de la numérisation du patrimoine littéraire était déjà annoncé.
