Earl's Geodesic Domes Page - Modifying Dome Geometry for a Larger Entrance Triangle. The general idea The EMT domes shown in these pages have strut lengths around 5 feet.
This means that the entrance or entrances to these domes will end up being whatever triangle(s) at the bottom is/are biggest. That means a triangle that's more or less a 5-foot-sided equalateral trinagle. It is tiresome and uncomfortable for people to stoop to fit through this, plus it is impossible to move large objects (like furniture) through this opening. It is nicer to have a larger opening, but at the same time it should be stronger than every other part of the dome, otherwise it will be the weak spot where the dome will collapse and fail, meanwhile all the strength of the other 99% of the pieces won't contribute to the strength of the dome. My proposal is to modify the strut lengths (but not the geometry) of the minimal number of struts by the minimal amounts in order to enlarge one base triangle to a comfortable size.
Now the tricky question is what the new lengths of these 6 struts are. Geodesic Dome Construction. Home Design I decided to build 5/8 geodesic 3V dome.
All calculations and design you can see at Desert Domes. I calculated that I can build 12ft diameter dome using 41 1/2" steel conduit pipes. One horizontal bar will be removed to make and entrance for the door.
How I built my Geodesic Domes. Nosefish Dome Deck. The web pages which follow provide step-by-step instructions for building a deck on a 2v optimal dome.
In fact, you could build a deck on any geodesic dome. It took me about eight hours of labor to construct the parts, except that I already had some pieces left over from previous projects. I'd say this is a good weekend project. If you are also planning to construct the dome on which the deck will rest, build the dome first.
It makes no sense to begin the deck project until you have the dome finished and assembled. Dome of a HomeBuilding the Dome » Dome of a Home. Earl's Geodesic Domes Page - Home Dome. Purpose This geodesic dome is intended to be a comfortable temporary structure for about 2 to 4 people to sleep and lounge in.
Though i'm building it for Burning Man, it could be useful for some other multi-day car camping expedition. (For example, Burning Man next year.) I stayed in it for a week at Burning Man 2001 and it was comfortable and nice to have all that space. It's also fun to set up in the backyard for parties and so on. Frame. Burning Man 2002: The Dome. What am I, nuts?
I'm doing it. Taking the plunge. I came, I saw, I wanted, I'm building. I have decided to build a geodome for Burning Man 2002. This is going to function as a chill space for the group I am traveling with this year, The Island of Big Bang. I am chronicalling my efforts below, complete with photos. And speaking of specs, here they are: INJECTION MOLDED Monolithic HOME™ As engineers and architects have examined Raw Energy Materials solution to the commercialization of a system to allow cost effective mass production of fully molded in one shot monolithic pour in place homes.
They question the success of attempting to mold such a complex structure using local unskilled labor and with standard pump mix concrete. Without all the information their concerns would appear to be justifiable for the following reasons. #1 Standard concrete pump mix is among other things very heavy at 140-150 pounds per cubic foot resulting in hydrostatic pressures perhaps excessive for plastic molds. #2 Portland concrete also has an affinity to hold moisture that will produce a home with anexcessively damp living environment. #3 Portland based cements have shrinkage issues as they set and cure.
However:the following is how and why our simple light weight system works. Cellular expanded cement is not a new concept; in fact it is well proven using Portland based cements. Frequently Asked Questions. Are the results of the dome calculator given in feet, inches, or meters?
The results of the dome calculator are the same unit of measure you used for the radius. If you enter the radius in feet, the strut lengths will be in feet. The dome calculator simply multiplies your number by constants, so the unit doesn't matter. What does 3/8 and 5/8 mean? The odd frequency domes are not exactly half of a sphere. How do you put these things together? If you are building your dome from the bottom up, here is some useful information: You will need to lay out the appropriate number of struts in a circle to get started.
Conduit Dome Tips. Conduit, or EMT seems to be the material of choice for domes at Burning Man.
Conduit is easy to work with, relatively inexpensive, and plated so painting isn't necessary. This page will provide tips for making conduit framed domes. STEP 1: Deciding on a frequency The first thing you need to do is figure out what type of dome you want to build. If this is your first dome, the 2 or 3 frequency domes are recommended. These domes require a fewer number of struts, and therefore less confusion. Flex-Ability Concepts. Flex-Ability Concepts. How to Build a Dome Part 1 of 3. GEODESIC DOME CONNECTOR MEDUSA. Frameless Geodesic Dome. Timberline Geodesics. The only tools you will need are: Socket Wrenches Hammers Ladders Scaffolding (desirable) Nail Gun (desirable) A 35' 5/8 sphere dome assembled by a group of friends and neighbors with no dome building experience. Thanks to our patented color coded SteelStar connectors and pre-cut struts this dome was assembled in about three hours.
The structural framework of a Timberline Dome consists of 2" x 6" wooden struts and our unique heavy duty SteelStar Connector system. The color-coded struts are bolted to color-coded connectors using two wrenches. To complete the basic dome shell, pre-cut, color-coded triangular plywood panels are nailed to the framework. Geodesic domes are one of the strongest, lightest structures you can build. Due to their unique design, they are wind, hurricane and tornado resistant. Home. Geodesic - geodesic spheres. Usage Usage: geodesic [options] [input_file] Read a file in OFF format and make a higher frequency, plane-faced polyhedron or geodesic sphere. If input_file is not given the program reads from standard input Options -h,--help this help message (run 'off_util -H help' for general help) --version version information -f <freq> pattern frequency, a positive integer (default: 1) giving the number of repeats of the specified pattern along an edge -F <freq> final step frequency, minimum number of edges to move between base vertices in the geodesic model.
For a pattern m,n the step frequency is pattern_frequency/(m+n) -c <clss> face division pattern, 1 (Class I, default), 2 (Class II), or two numbers separated by a comma to determine the pattern (Class III, but n,0 or 0,n is Class I, and n,n is Class II) -M <mthd> Method of applying the frequency pattern: s - geodesic sphere (default). The pattern grid is formed from divisions along each edge that make an equal angle at the centre. Examples. Rick Bono's Geodesic Dome Program - DOME 4.80. DOME 4.80ar.02 DOME is a program, by Rick Bono, for creating models of geodesic domes, spheres and related models. I have modified DOME 4.80 slightly to add support for OFF output, which can then be processed and displayed by Antiprism and other packages (but see also, the Antiprism geodesic program, which will make Class I, II, and III models based on general polyhedra). While I was looking at this I fixed some small problems I had getting DOME to build.
I converted the build to use the Autotools, which will hopefully help with portability. I also made minor changes to the POV-Ray output to make it compatible with the latest version of POV-Ray. As the program no longer seems to have an official web page I am making my changes available on this page. I don't plan on making any further changes to the code, but I will look at any problems with the build. 2v Dome calculation tools.
