Badly-planned trees would increase greenhouse gas emissions, say the government’s advisers on the economic value of the natural environment. The report comes from the Natural Capital Committee (NCC), which says planting trees into peat bogs would prove a serious mistake. Peat locks up vast quantities of carbon - but trees dry out peat. This can release more greenhouse gases than the trees absorb. One NCC member, Prof Ian Bateman from the University of Exeter, said: “The mantra has to be ‘the right tree in the right place’ “We would be crazy to undertake the massive scale of planting being considered if we did not also consider the wider effects upon the environment including impacts on wildlife, benefits in terms of reducing flood risks and effects on water quality, improvements to recreation and so on.” Will millions more trees really stop climate change?

Climate change: Green energy plant threat to wilderness areas. Image copyright Getty Images Wind, solar and hydro power installations pose a growing threat to key conservation areas, say researchers.
Researchers found that over 2,200 green energy plants have been built within the boundaries of the Earth's remaining wilderness. They say that around 17% of renewable facilities globally are located in protected regions. A further 900 plants are now being developed in key areas of biodiversity. The amount of renewable energy facilities in use around the world has essentially tripled over the last 20 years. Green energy facilities are often much larger than fossil fuel power plants, with wind and solar needing areas of land up to 10 times greater than coal or gas to produce the same amount of energy. Now researchers say that often these solar, wind and hydro schemes have been built in areas of environmental significance and pose a threat to key natural habitats.

Someone posted that question on Twitter the other day, which for some reason got picked up by football fans, who started replying with jokey comments such as “Roberto Baggio’s first touch” — a reference to the otherworldly ball control of the retired Italian attacking midfielder. Anyway, I mention it because when I read that question, I immediately thought of marijuana. I promise it’s not because I’m an addict — it’s just that I’m spending a lot of time in Los Angeles with my business at the moment, and you can’t avoid the heady aroma of cannabis throughout the city.
