Many Moriscos continued to practice Islam, most in secret, but some did so openly. A decree issued by King Felipe II in 1566 oblidged the Moriscos to adopt Spanish language, dress and customs. Mozarabic descends from Late Latin and early Romance dialects spoken in the Hispania from the 5th to the 8th centuries and was spoken until the 14th century.
