Africa’s hydropower future. Africa’s hydropower future From Côte d’Ivoire in the west to Ethiopia in the east, Africa is home to some of the world’s fastest growing economies.
Debates often proclaim a new era of economic boom, innovation and social opportunity for the continent. But beyond the hype, millions of people remain affected by severe poverty, and at the root of this lies a perennial problem: energy poverty. Could hydropower hold the key to energy access in Africa? Energy poverty is rife in Africa. Rapid population growth looks set to further strain energy services, with some estimating that the continent’s population will surpass four billion by the end of the century. Access to electricity is both limited and uneven. In the face of rampant energy poverty, African governments are increasingly turning to renewable sources to spur development and improve lives and livelihoods.
Africa's new breed of solar energy entrepreneurs. African economies may be booming, but continued growth and quality of life are being jeopardised by lack of power.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates 585 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to electricity, with the electrification rate as low as 14.2% in rural areas. The problem is most acute in East Africa, where only 23% of Kenyans; 10.8% of Rwandans; and 14.8% of Tanzanians have access to an electricity supply, according to the World Bank. In spite of efforts to get people onto the grid, population growth has meant these figures stay fairly steady, with the majority of people still using costly and unhealthy forms of energy for cooking and lighting. A number of companies and organisations on the continent have identified solar power as the solution. And a new breed of "solar-preneurs" is emerging, increasing access to power and generating revenues at the same time. Modular living "In many places in sub-Saharan Africa, populations are quite dispersed. How to encourage investment in Africa’s energy sector. Research network to boost development in Africa planned.
[NAIROBI] A new research and capacity building hub focusing on sustainable development issues in Africa will be established by mid this year, a meeting has heard.
The STEPS Africa Sustainability Hub, which was announced during a meeting held in Kenya last year (6 November), aims to create a network of African researchers with interest in sustainable development. David Ockwell, the deputy executive director of Social, Technical and Environmental Pathways to Sustainability (STEPS) Centre, which is located in the UK-based Institute of Development Studies, said the hub will help Africans address critical issues of development through research and capacity building. “This will be a research network that will look at pro-poor pathways to low carbon development and energy transitions that meet the needs of the poor.”
David Ockwell, STEPS Centre, According to Ozor, Africa needs energy in industries to aid innovations and technological developments, an area that he says the hub should focus on.
