9 Squares Collaboration Explores Motion Design

Nine designers are each given a 350-pixel square, four colors, and three seconds to create any kind of animation they like. The results are then gathered together to create a single animated GIF. Saturday’s workshop was probably the one of the most challenging, but fun workshops yet, we made flip books -which are basically a series of drawings that seem to move, as the pages are rapidly turned. Animated films and the skills needed to produce them can provide a stimulus to learning across the curriculum – especially in Art and Design, History, ICT and Literacy. When talking about animation in class, it is important to stress that 'animation' is a performing art rather than a graphic art. The drawings and models replace actors and actresses, so when children are creating their own animation it is important to approach it through the creative skills they would use in drama rather than graphical skills. Children will have their own preconceived ideas about what animation is from what they have seen at the cinema and watched on television.

The children had been making their own stop motion animations (using I Can Animate and iMovie) with considerable success. We've been making these for many years now and we seem to learn new tricks each and every time we make another.
