Written By: Angelita Williams It's almost cruel the way adults ease children into life outside of the house. They got us on board with the whole going to school thing by letting us take naps in pre-school. But then, come kindergarten, no more naps! Nothing but 12 more grades of trying to focus all day without a siesta. But now, friends, it's a new day. In college you have two-hour chunks of free time between classes, just aching to be filled with some snooze action. It makes you smarter According to Dr. If it was good enough for them… Presidents JFK and Bill Clinton used to nap every day to help ease the heavy burden of ruling the free world.

"… so we repaired to a publick-house, took a friendly glass, and thus parted. " — Peter Drake, Amiable Renegade: The Memoirs of Captain Peter Drake, 1671–1753, 1960 "… Warren repaired to the dining alcove off the kitchen … and ate dinner with Nina and the children, discussing their schoolwork and events of the day. " — Kevin Starr, Embattled Dreams, 2002 We are all familiar with the verb repair used as a synonym of fix. But today's word, while it is a homograph and a homophone of the more familiar repair, is a slightly older and unrelated verb.

Repair, the synonym of fix, comes via Anglo-French from the Latin reparare, a combination of the re- prefix and parare ("prepare"). Repair, the synonym of go (which in English also once meant "to return"), has Anglo-French and Latin roots too, but makes its way back to the Late Latin repatriare (which means "to go home again" and is a source of the English repatriate). Vocabulary Practice With Rap Your Words. Vocabulary Practice With Rap Your Words Posted on Thu, Sep 15, 2011 I love being able to let popular celebrities inspire my students with a positive educational message, especially the most unlikely ones. Eminem did my work for me when he was interviewed by 60 Minutes; he talked about how he can rhyme unlikely words together and therefore has an almost obsessive need to know as many words as possible.

That one snippet of his interview alone is a great inspiration as to why students should care about learning new vocabulary! I also use his interview to prime students right before I assign them to write their own vocabulary raps (or song lyrics if students would rather not rap but sing). My students team up in pairs and have to use at least 15 of the 20 vocabulary words of their current unit. They also should incorporate 5 other words from past units-for some groups, this is mandatory, other groups it is optional, depending on the skills of the students. A quick and safe way to browse. Introduction[edit] The study of physics is intimately tied in with the study of mathematics. Sometimes, the direction of a number or quantity is as important as the number itself. Mathematicians in the 19th century developed a convenient way of describing and interacting with quantities with and without direction by dividing them into two types: scalar quantities and vector quantities. Scalar quantities have a magnitude but no direction.

Vector quantities have both a magnitude and a direction. For instance, one might describe a plane as flying at 400 miles per hour. However, simply knowing the speed of the airplane is not nearly as useful as knowing the speed and direction of the airplane, so a more accurate description may be a plane flying at 400 miles per hour southeast. Scalar Quantities[edit] Scalar quantities are numbers that have a magnitude but no direction. . Vector Quantities[edit] Vectors are a geometric way of representing quantities that have direction as well as magnitude. Or. Brilliant: Hard Math and Science Questions and Practice.
