Open Access Journals - OSP Journals. Background: Acute appendicitis is one of the most common abdominal pains in children.
Perforated appendicitis can result in a variety of potentially serious complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) as predictors of appendiceal perforation in children. Materials and methods: We identified 201 children (75 female; 126 male, mean ages, 7.6 y) with histologically confirmed acute appendicitis after appendectomy between January 2015 and January 2018.
Preoperative laboratory data such as CRP, white blood cell (WBC), PCT and part of postoperative histologic results were analyzed retrospectively. We also performed a multivariate logistic regression model to determine patient's age and laboratory tests associated with perforated appendicitis. Results: Mean plasma PCT level of all patients was 1.98 ng/mL (5.73 SD; range, 0.02–64.77 ng/mL; median, 0.18ng/mL). Peer Reviewed Dental Journal - OSP Journals. Purpose: The implications of performing hip arthroscopy in obese and non-obese patients have not been well documented in recent literature.
Thus, this study assesses 30-day surgical outcomes between obese and matched non-obese patients using a large national database. Methods: The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was utilized to identify hip arthroscopy patients from 2008-2016. Ophthalmology Peer Reviewed Journal - OSP Journals. Purpose: To elucidate optical coherence tomography features that may be predictive of visual outcomes after phacoemulsification in eyes with a primary and secondary Epiretinal Membrane (ERM).
Patients and methods: Retrospective consecutive case series. Visual Acuity (VA) and Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) characteristics at pre-operative and post-operative visits in eyes with pre- existing ERM that underwent uncomplicated phacoemulsification were analyzed. Results: In the 57 eyes, median VA improved significantly from 20/50 at baseline to 20/30 at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months (all p <0.001). VA improved by at least 3 lines in 45% to 58% of eyes at each time point. Mean OCT Central Foveal Thickness (CFT) was 335 μm at baseline and increased by 33 μm (p<0.001), 17 μm (p=0.005), 36 μm (p=0.018), and 11 μm (p=0.18) at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, respectively. Arterial Narrowing But No Effect on Oxygen Saturation after Anti-VEGF Treatment in Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy. Background: Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR) can be treated with intra-vitreal injection of anti-VEGF compounds.
It can be expected that the study of the effects of this treatment on the diameter and oxygen saturation of larger retinal vessels may contribute to our knowledge about the pathophysiology of PDR. Methods: Seventeen patients referred with PDR and neovascularizations at the optic disk were subjected to retinal oximetry before and (mean ± SD) 6.9 ± 3.8 days after intra-vitreal injection with anti-VEGF compound. Changes in diameter and oxygen saturation in the larger retinal vessels before and after treatment were assessed.
Results: At the follow-up examinations the diameter of retinal arterioles had decreased significantly from (mean ± SD) 118.7 ± 13.9 µm to 109.5 ± 18.7 µm (p<0.01), whereas there was no significant change in the diameter of retinal venules (p=0.24). Design Study population. Variation of Iris Thickness in Different Regions in Healthy Chinese Adults: An Optical Coherence Tomography Study. Purpose: To study the variation of iris thicknesses in different regions and explore the possible correlations with age and gender. Methods: Healthy Chinese adults were recruited; the anterior segment of their eyes was imaged by swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). The horizontal scan of the right eye was selected, and the thicknesses of both the nasal and temporal irises were measured at 199 evenly spaced points.
Results: A total of 233 subjects with an average age of 36.79±10.04 years (range 19 to 62) were included in the final analysis. The mean iris thicknesses of the temporal and nasal sides were 364.79±47.58 μm and 372.44±43.75 μm, respectively. The mean nasal iris thickness was positively correlated with age (β=0.9 μm/year, P=0.002), but the temporal one was not (β=0.077 μm/year, P=0.806). Combined Phacovitrectomy Versus Sequential Approach in Eyes with Epiretinal Membrane and Cataract. Aims: To compare the visual, anatomic and refractive outcomes in eyes treated with combined phacovitrectomy versus sequential phacoemulsification and vitrectomy. Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed of eyes with cataract and idiopathic Epiretinal Membrane (ERM) that underwent either combined or sequential phacoemulsification and Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV). Data were collected at preoperative (baseline) and Postoperative Month (POM) 1, 3-6, and 12, and the most recent exam beyond POM12 (last exam).
Changes from baseline in visual acuity (mean approximate ETDRS letter score), mean Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) parameters, and mean Refractive Target Error (RTE) calculated as the difference between predicted and actual Spherical Equivalent (SE) were compared between the combined and sequential groups. Results: Of 100 eyes assessed, 65 had combined phacovitrectomy, 28 had phaco 1st, and 7 had PPV 1st.
No significant differences in RTE were observed between groups. Microbial keratitis-a study of aetiopathogenesis and drug susceptibility prevalent in community in North eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, India. Context: Ophthalmic morbidities pose a huge burden to society as well as individuals. In India the projected prevalence of blindness as per (2015-2018) survey from NPCB is 0.45 %, of which corneal blindness constitute 0.9% causes. Microbial keratitis is an important cause attributing to avoidable cause of corneal blindness.
Aims: To determine the aetiopathogenesis and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern among the isolates causing microbial keratitis. Settings and design: It were a prospective study carried out from June 2014 to April 2019. Optical Coherence Tomography as a Predictor of Visual Outcomes after Phacoemulsification in Eyes with Preexisting Epiretinal Membranes. Contribution of Screw Position to Correction of Axial Rotation in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. Background: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) results in three-dimensional malrotation that cannot be fully characterized on 2-view radiographs. Pedicle screw placement is the preferred method to safely and effectively reduce axial rotation, and screw placement at the scoliotic apex has been considered paramount.
Purpose: To evaluate axial rotation correction on CT in AIS patients undergoing pedicle screw placement at the thoracic curve apex. Surgical Complications in Obese Patients Undergoing Hip Arthroscopy: A Propensity-Score Matched Study.
Inclusion criteria included patients who underwent hip arthroscopy for femoroplasty, acetabuloplasty, arthroscopy with labral repair, and arthroscopy with debridement/shaving of articular cartilage.
