Happy Ending problem. The Happy Ending problem: every set of five points in general position contains the vertices of a convex quadrilateral.
The Happy Ending problem (so named by Paul Erdős because it led to the marriage of George Szekeres and Esther Klein) is the following statement: Theorem. Any set of five points in the plane in general position[1] has a subset of four points that form the vertices of a convex quadrilateral. Radiation Therapy Harms the Brain, Causing Memory and Attention Problems. (NaturalNews) Radiation therapy for the treatment of brain tumors may lead to cognitive decline later in life, according to a study conducted by researchers from VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and published in The Lancet Neurology.
Scientists have known for some time that radiation therapy can damage healthy brain tissue, but prior research found no immediate negative effects from the treatment. In the new study, researchers conducted brain function tests on 65 patients who had undergone treatment for low-grade glioma 12 years previously. Low-grade glioma is one of the most common forms of brain tumor. It is non-carcinogenic, and can often be removed with surgery. However, many doctors use radiotherapy following surgery. The researchers found that a full 53 percent of patients who had been treated with radiation exhibited problems with mental function 12 years after their treatment, compared with only 27 percent of those who had not undergone radiation treatment.
Mild cognitive impairment: More than the usual forgetfulness. Some difficulty with remembering things (like names) and forgetting where you put things (like keys) is so typical that it’s considered a normal part of aging.
But some people experience a middle ground of cognitive impairment that’s worse than normal age-related problems but not as bad as dementia from Alzheimer’s disease or other brain diseases. Researchers labeled this intermediate state “mild cognitive impairment” in the 1980s, and the name stuck. Mild cognitive impairment stays mild in many cases. At the same time, studies have shown that people with the condition are about three times more likely to develop full-blown dementia than those without it. Creative problem-solving, a type of problem solving, is the mental process of searching for a new and novel creative solution to a problem, a solution which is novel, original and not obvious.
Creative solution types[edit] The creative solution[edit] To qualify as creative problem-solving, the solution must solve the stated problem in a novel way, and the solution must be reached independently.[1] Creative problem-solving usually begins with defining the problem. This may lead to a simple non-creative solution, or to finding a "textbook solution". Critical thinking. Critical thinking is a type of clear, reasoned thinking.
According to Beyer (1995) Critical thinking means making clear, reasoned judgements. While in the process of critical thinking, ideas should be reasoned and well thought out/judged.[1] The National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking defines critical thinking as the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action.
