Une de nos idées était de travailler sur un texte russe. Il y a plusieurs années, Wolfgang Wiens avait proposé The Old Woman. Aucun de nous ne connaissions l’œuvre de Daniil Kharms, mais une fois que nous l’avons lue, l’idée nous a plu. Je me suis dit que Darryl Pinckney était la personne idéale pour l’adapter. Darryl est un ami et un collabo- rateur artistique depuis longtemps et il connaît très bien mon travail.
Il a accepté de le faire, et a traduit et adapté le texte pour le théâtre en un peu plus de trois mois. Nous avons organisé un atelier de quelques jours au Watermill Center pendant l’été 2012, pour donner une direction à ce spectacle et nous permettre, à Misha et à moi, de comprendre nos manières respectives de tra- vailler. Antonin Artaud. Considered among the most influential figures in the evolution of modern drama theory, Antonin Artaud associated himself with Surrealist writers, artists, and experimental theater groups in Paris during the 1920s. When political differences resulted in his break from the Surrealists, he founded the Theatre Alfred Jarry with Roger Vitrac and Robert Aron. Together they hoped to create a forum for works that would radically change French theater. Artaud, especially, expressed disdain for Western theater of the day, panning the ordered plot and scripted language his contemporaries typically employed to convey ideas, and he recorded his ideas in such works as Le Theatre de la cruaute and The Theater and Its Double.
Although Artaud's theater of cruelty was not widely embraced, his ideas have been the subject of many essays on modern theater, and many writers continue to study Artaud's concepts. Author George E. The man who coined the term ‘theatre of cruelty’ spent a significant portion of his later life in asylums, and when on the outside, addicted to opium. Much of Artaud’s writings on the theatre are difficult to comprehend and his manifestos in ‘The Theatre and Its Double’ are not exactly bedtime reading. Artaud often has less appeal to teachers and students of theatre than other theorists and practitioners because his techniques are not readily translatable. One has to work hard to decipher how Artaud’s concepts for his Theatre of Cruelty become concrete conventions for the stage.
But this does not mean we should dismiss Artaud or his influence on 20th century theatre. I have recently been working with my Year 12 Drama class on Artaud, scouring numerous texts in order to understand his Theatre of Cruelty techniques in some depth.
