Undergraduate teachers continuously struggle to design courses that can support the development of deep and active learning strategies in their students. Proponents of the flipped classroom suggest that it can enhance teacher-student interactions, facilitate deep learning through active learning activities in the classroom, help students understand their own learning styles and preferences, and foster student engagement (26). Another issue that is ripe for exploration is the impact of the flipped classroom on multitasking behaviors. Course Design. The Impact of Ebooks final report. Children’s Reading Improves Faster with eBooks - If You Can Get the Tech to Work.
There's a story going around this week about a new report on ebook reading in classrooms in the UK.
Drawing on dozens of reading programs in schools across the UK, the national Literary Trust published a report that said: The researchers studied the boys’ reading performance for an average of 4.2 months - and found that their reading age improved by 8.4 months during that period.Girls also improved at a better rate than the norm - showing a 7.2 month improvement. The study went on to show the percentage of boys who found reading difficult halved from 28 per cent to 15.9 per cent. It's a pretty nifty report, and if you want to read more you can find coverage in The Telegraph, the Independent, or Teleread. You can also find the entire report on the NLT's website (PDF). But as I was reading I found a couple details that I think most would miss, to their detriment. An ebook platform can't simply crash during finals, like Coursesmart did in 2013. Four stages of research on the educational use of ubiquitous computing. In this paper, the Gartner Group’s hype cycle is used as the basis for categorizing and analyzing research on the educational use of ubiquitous computing.
There are five phases of the hype cycle: the technology trigger, the peak of inflated expectations, the trough of disillusionment, the slope of enlightenment, and the plateau of productivity. Research on the educational use of mobile technology is divided in this paper into four stages: (i) a period of mobility and personal digital assistants; (ii) the era of wireless Internet learning devices; (iii) the introduction of social mobile media; and (iv) a ubiquitous future.
In addition, three empirical case studies are used as examples of these developmental stages. These case studies demonstrate the diversity of contexts, methods, and technologies used, ranging from the workplace to nature trails, from inquiry learning to collaborative knowledge building, and from PocketPCs to smartphones.
