Supreme Court concluded in a unanimous ruling issued Wednesday morning. The ruling could have significant implications in interpreting which state domestic violence laws bar gun possession. Because of this relationship between gun ownership and intimate violence, federal law bars those convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence offense from possessing a gun. The Supreme Court disagreed with Castleman Wednesday, holding that the crime of “intentionally or knowingly” causing bodily injury to the mother of his child was a crime that involved “physical force,” and that Castleman was therefore barred from possessing a gun. This country witnesses more than a million acts of domestic violence, and hundreds of deaths from domestic violence, each year.

Photo by Karen Bleier/AFP/Getty Images Jeremy Hutchinson, a Republican state senator in Arkansas, is one voice in an NRA-led chorus of them who want to see armed teachers in his state's classrooms.
Only days after the tragic shooting in Newtown, Hutchinson proposed deputizing teachers who wanted to carry guns at work. And just yesterday, he continued to advocate for an Arkansas school district to be allowed to move forward with a plan to arm about 20 teachers, administrators and other staff this fall. Apparently, nothing will change his mind, as this are-you-sure-there-isn't-a-lesson-in-there anecdote uncovered by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette suggests (emphasis mine): Sen. After the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, Hutchinson became interested in arming school personnel, he said.
The experience gave Hutchinson some pause, but he still supports giving schools the authority to decide how best to secure their campuses. Armas, videos, violencia. His collection of stuffed animals, won from those arcade claw games, stared back at him from their perch on his top bunk. Devin felt he had outgrown the cutesy animal prints that had adorned the walls of his Oakdale, Minn., bedroom. He was in fourth grade now, after all. Without telling anyone, he had yanked the prints off his walls one by one. The night before, Devin had watched the Disney channel and played with his pirate gear and a couple of toy dinosaurs on his mother’s bed. "The morning was usual," recalled Melissa Aryal, Devin’s mother. On the seven-minute ride in their minivan, Aryal, 39, kept the radio off so she could talk with Devin.
