Not only has he made new friends but he has improved in so many areas of his development. His motor skills have become more defined, his balance, his co-ordination are even better but most of all he has developed a crucial discipline and a genuine respect for others. He brings home all of his new moves which we love watching him demonstrate but he now always wants to help because it’s good to ‘work together’ and do ‘team work’.

George’s instructor Rebecca is one of a kind, full of respect for the children, she explains things to them in a way that they will understand and she gets good feedback from them all, one day, no doubt, she’ll be a fantastic mum running a very tight ship! All of the instructors do a great job and are very patient, because no two children are the same and they deal with them as individuals. – Clare Diable. Corporate Programs. WAIMA has changed my Life in many ways. The very start of my martial arts journey goes way back to February 2013.

WAIMA has changed my Life in many ways

During my childhood years going into my teenage years I didn’t really do much with my life, during that time I was too afraid to do anything that involved me getting out of the house, I was really shy and timid and occasionally built up some anxiety when overthinking things. One day my mum asked me if I wanted to go watch an old friend of mine grade for their next belt at the WA Institute of Martial Arts (WAIMA) in Currambine, so I agreed and came along. When I walked inside the building and saw everything that was happening and also watching my friend do their grading I told my mum I want to do something like this and I started as soon as I could. After months and years went by I reached my green belt and received 5 tips on my belt, I was so thrilled and excited at where my journey was at. Daniel Mountfort. Attack and Defence in the Martial Arts

As regular readers of our blog will know, we are keen to explore some of the philosophical and spiritual guidance of martial arts training. So, we will try to clarify certain aspects of that here. Competitive martial arts The first distinction to make is that between the competitive martial arts and self-defence. In a competitive bout, participants are trying to score points and win. This is no different to many other competitive sports, where both strategies may be used. Self-defence This situation is different to the above. It usually suggests a position where the violence is real and not competitive. In such circumstances, our training and the techniques used will emphasise defence.

However, there are exceptions. Please understand, this is nothing whatsoever to do with the idea of a pre-emptive strike or “getting them before they get you”. Judgment.
