Burlesque has seen a comeback recently and all over the world a revival has begun with more and more troops being formed, Perth included. Quite common within this scene now are variety shows, which combine an array of acts such as fire twirling, musical acts, dance routines and juggling. I personally know a few people from this scene not only as performers but also through the social sub-culture that Burlesque is a part of. Burlesque acts, or performing to generalize is a personal interest of mine and I have attended many shows and constantly documented what I saw, not just the performances but the people who attend such shows, many of whom I know and are equally as fascinating.
With this photo essay I wanted to show the excitement, the beauty, the energy and to give an overall voice, feeling of this alternate, underground world. The Perth Photoh team have just launched their latest endeavour - a Youth Photography Course, which will run every Saturday afternoon at Lake Monger.
This fun, educational and interactive course has been specifically designed for youths aged between 12 and 18. The course is hosted by Marijke Loosjes, a West Australian artist and photographer who specialises in street art and portrait photography. Marijke has completed a Bachelor of Fine Art majoring in photography at Curtin University, and she has curated her own exhibitions throughout Australia. Over the 2 hour course, Marijke will teach her students a variety of basic photography principles, including rule of thirds, rule of odds, subject selection and isolation, texture, pattern and repetition, colour vs monochrome, exposure, focal length and lenses and shutter speed. The course is held in a small group size, ensuring Marijke is able to offer her students personalised advice and guidance. Youth Photography Course - Perth. Jake Millar chats with artist Marijke Loosjes. 'I don't know much about art, but I know what I like.' It's an old chestnut, a phrase gallery visitors have been uttering for as long as there have been galleries at all. “The idea behind the show is just looking at the taboo and the abject in our society and bringing it more to the surface,” explains Loosjes of the exhibition that includes two different bodies of her photographic work.
“The second body of work is around a similar theme, but it's all new work that I've done this year. “I've noticed colour plays a big part because it attracts people, but once they get closer they realise some of the shots are of things that aren't stereotypically beautiful.” And right now, Loosjes has a lot on her plate. But Loosjes has no plans to put the camera down just yet. Fear of Comedy.
