Israeliano classe 1973, oramai onnipresente sulle copertine dei magazine di tutto il mondo, il suo stile costituisce un unicum nel panorama dell’illustrazione, collocandosi in un punto imprecisato fra ritratto, caricatura, pittogramma e graphic design e forse, come ha scritto il Guardian, spingendo quest’arte verso un’ulteriore dimensione. Il tuo primo ritratto risale alla Guerra del Golfo: eri in un rifugio assieme alla tua famiglia e ad un tratto hai notato che se tracciavi il contorno del viso, il segnale della radioattività assomigliava decisamente a Saddam Hussein. Questo ti è valso il primo lavoro importante quando più tardi ti sei trasferito a Londra. A quale punto della tua carriera hai capito di aver realizzato qualcosa di unico nel panorama dell’illustrazione? The Israel-born graphic designer and illustrator has produced illustrations for publications such as The Guardian and New York Times and for book covers for Don DeLillo and Haruki Murakami. He's also created ad campaigns for Google, Sony and Nike, and has published three of his own books to date, including his most recent monograph, Bittersweet. We spoke to Noma about this and much more. You have a new monograph out called Bittersweet. Are there any illustrations or projects that especially stand out for you? I suppose I’d have to choose William Shakespeare, as it was one of the first projects that established what I’m doing today.
The other project that stands out is Cut the Conflict, a series that explored the conflict between warring nations. There is another one I really like. You have a very unique style. Plenty. His work has appeared in numerous media outlets e.g Time Out London, BBC, The Observer, The Economist and Wallpaper. He has published over 550 illustrations and over 60 magazine covers. I’ve taken inspiration from his work as its so different to anything I’ve seen previously. He uses shapes to create illusions of different objects or people. In an interview with New Yorker, he was asked how he became familiar with this idea of a career.

He has also won a Yellow Pencil award at the D&AD Professional Awards and his London Design Festival exhibition 'Cut It Out', was selected as one of the highlights of the festival.
