Where I’m At: Ho Chi Minh City – Upcoming travels

Greetings from Ho Chi Minh City. My three month visa expires in a few days so rather than extending it I will be getting back on the road. Here is what I’ll be doing over the next few weeks. On sunday I will be flying to Taipei, which will be my first visit to Taiwan. I’ve heard lots of good things about the city so I will be spending two weeks to explore and visit as many cafes as humanly possible. From Taipei my next stop is Hong Kong where I will spend two days.

Understand[edit] Following the fall of Saigon in 1975, Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City. However the old Saigon name is still used by both Vietnamese and foreigners, especially when referring to the most central part of the city to which most tourists flock. Though Vietnam has been united since the conclusion of Vietnam War, cultural differences arising from the division of Vietnam can be seen to this day. Beeeeeeeeeeeeep!!!!!! Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) - Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Travel Blog

It seemed that from the many travellers we'd met along the way, the general consensus was that the people were aggressive and rude in comparison to other country's on the SE Asia trail. We'd heard a few tales of travellers being physically accosted when exiting tourists bus's and their bags taken from them an put into taxi cab boots. We figured we'd keep an open mind and judge for ourselves when we got there. Surprisingly, the bus journey and border crossing from Cambodia ran pretty smoothly and didn't take too long. We only had today to explore Saigon so I wasted no time. I had a map and just walked around for a couple of hours. I love the madness; motorbikes, people selling trinkets, sunglasses, fruit etc, older people sitting and watching, the yummy food smells, etc, etc, etc. I got back to our room at 09.30 and we all headed out to find the well known Ben Thanh markets, the place is vibrant and you can buy anything here. We found an excellent childrens park, the first one weve come across since we got here, so Rune was well happy to play for a while. Hell in Ho Chi Minh..... - Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Travel Blog. Thanks to the world financial crisis, the skyrocketing cost of fuel and fluctuating currencies of the late 2000’s, the idea of staycations – a holiday close to home – exploded onto the scene. It was suddenly trendy to stay at a quaint little B&B and visit area attractions instead of blowing the budget on far-flung destinations. Admittedly, I’m a late adopter to staycations, preferring in my youth to travel to the farthest points I could afford. But now that I’m approaching my first anniversary of living in Vietnam, I can look back on delicious highs and frustrating lows right here in sunny Saigon.
