Aussie guitarist Stu Marshall is in good form when I ring him up to chat about his band’s new album; the band in question, of course, is Death Dealer, and the album, the band’s third, is the soon-to-be-released Conquered Lands.
Several years in the making, it sees Marshall (last seen around these parts with his band Night Legion) joining forces once more with former Manowar/Dictators guitarist Ross The Boss and Cage/Three Tremors vocalist Sean Peck. You must be excited to have a new album almost ready to go with these guys again? “Yes, this album is quite a few years in the making! The first two Death Dealer albums (2013’s War Master and Hallowed Ground from 2015) came together quickly, off the back of some pretty heavy overseas touring. This one has taken three and a half years to build; Ross and Sean have both been very busy with their other projects, but I’m very happy with the result. Three albums in there’s quite definably now a Death Dealer ‘sound’.

American/Australian heavy metal supergroup Death Dealer are back with a third album (with two more in the can thanks to a productive COVID writing season according to guitarists Stu Marshall (Night Legion) and Manowar alumnus Ross The Boss), which sees the band further solidifying their place in the power metal marketplace, in the process refining their signature sound with a series of high velocity metal workouts designed to test the neck muscles of their Worldwide legion of fans… The band, rounded out by Symphony X bassist Mike LePond, Cage vocalist Sean Peck and drummer Steve Bolognese (who also pounds the skins in Ross The Boss’ solo band) cover all the bases on Conquered Land; Their hymn to returned servicemen, 22 Gone, is one of the best metal ballads I’ve heard this year, whilst the title track sees the band take the foot off the gas for a while to deliver a crawling, Black Sabbath-vibed stomper that you wouldn’t necessarily associate with this band.

The man known commonly as Ross The Boss is one of those people. Guitarist for a number of bands over the years including the mighty Manowar over the past few years The Boss has been focussing on his ‘super-group’ Death Dealer… a band made of many talented musos hailing from right around the world. Now Death Dealer are preparing for the release of their third album – Conquer Lands. This is an album that has been in the making for several years and was stretched that little further by a little thing called a pandemic. “After the second album we always said we were going to keep making albums,” Ross explains when I talk to him. So perhaps we should be thankful for the pandemic for small favours. And while some scribes have incorrectly said that the pandemic made it hard for Death Dealer to work on this album Ross says it didn’t change much at all.

A bunch of metalheads playing music they love Conquered Lands is the third album from Death Dealer, a band who constituents are drawn from across the metal universe, including Manowar, Into Eternity, Cage, Dungeon and now, adding gravitas to the bottom end, Mike LePond from Symphony X.
Reaction to Death Dealer’s albums will always hinge on the tolerance of the listener to Sean Peck’s histrionic vocals – his stratospheric high notes can be grating to the extent that the band’s debut War Master was unlistenable to some – but on this album he strikes a great balance with his range. Occasionally, he sounds like he’s pushing himself a little too far but metal of this kind always contains some degree of vocal straining, and when he’s on point – check out that scream at the end of Running With the Wolves – he shows why he’s truly revered by some in power metal circles.
