Album Review: Kvitravn – Wardruna – The Metal Wanderlust. When you consider the modern Folk Music movement, we can be quite sure of one thing: Wardruna are on the very top of that tree.

They have been able to cross over almost any musical border there might be and have a vast following among many different types of music fans. The main reason why many The Metal Wanderlust readers might take interest would be the Gorgoroth link of two founding members, Einar Selvik and Gaahl. Yet, Wardruna has nothing to do with the screeching Black Metal of their former unit. Not in the least. Instead, they move on the more meditative side of modern Folk, relying not only on the recording techniques of the day, but accompanying it with quite a number of traditional instruments of prehistoric Scandinavia.

We sat down with legendary Norwegian Composer Einar Selvik for the Everblack Podcast to talk about the much anticipated new Wardruna album ‘Kvitravn’, Nordic culture in popular media and the importance of sharing the stories through his music, working on the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla video game and more.

As this musical feat is as complex as Norse mythology itself, we settled in and attempted to unravel Wardruna layer by layer… The time, energy and resources that went into establishing and implementing Wardruna was no easy feat – and as I understand it, the initial process to complete the band’s first release took several years to complete – what was your sense of achievement with this and how rewarding has it been for your personally and as an advocate for the culture and tradition of Norway, of reintroducing this element of Norse culture back into the world?

Einar Selvik comments: “Wave of Giants is an old Norse poetic metaphor meaning ‘poetry’ that refers to the myth when the god Odin stole the mead of poetry from Kvasir the Jotun/giant.

The title felt very appropriate since much of my efforts on AC Valhalla has been about giving voice to the Skalds and the poetic traditions that once laid at the heart of the Norse culture. Einar: I see “Kvitravn” as a continuation rather than a new beginning. The Runaljod trilogy was such an all-consuming project that took me around 15 years to finish and during that time there were of course a lot of ideas that was set aside for later.

At first, I must admit that it was a bit challenging and overwhelming to suddenly have such a wealth of possibilities for the next project but once the focus and direction was decided there was no looking back. In many ways, this album deals with the same Nordic animistic themes as the trilogy but I would say that it dives more into detail on certain traditions, concepts and myths. 2. Einar: Well, generally speaking I would say that Wardruna is something organic that will continue to grow and evolve through everything we experience and learn. 3. 4.
