Teaching Strategy: Counter-Narrative. What is a counter-narrative?

Teaching Strategy: Counter-Narrative

Counter-narratives or counter-stories are “a method of telling the stories of those people whose experiences are not often told” (Solorzano and Yosso 2002, 26). Counter-stories then on the one hand provide an opportunity to hear alternative voices, and, on the other hand, challenge the dominant narratives, which usually carry assumptions and prejudices of the dominant group(s). Simply put, counter-narratives can be used to broaden students’ perspectives and illustrate the value of considering several sides of the same issue, while understanding that every dominant position implies other suppressed positions. This approach can also equip students with relevant skills such as critical self-reflection, ability to recognize one’s own identity and social contexts around it, and the ability to navigate the diverse socio-cultural contexts in the increasingly global and interconnected world. The Big Religion Chart - ReligionFacts. This "Big Religion Chart" is our attempt to summarize the major religions, worldviews and belief systems of the world - Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and dozens more - into a quick-reference comparison chart.

The Big Religion Chart - ReligionFacts

Oversimplication is unavoidable in charts like these, and it is not intended to be a substitute for advanced religious study and exploration, but simply a quick overview. It is our hope that this chart can be a useful tool to compare basic religious beliefs and practices of the world's religions and belief systems. Over 40 religions and belief systems are currently listed.

If a group does not appear, it doesn't mean it's not a religion or doesn't matter; the chart is not comprehensive and will continue to grow. Powell, speaking at a time when concerns over immigration from Commonwealth countries such as India and Pakistan was causing alarm, became a deeply polarised figure in British public life. For while thousands of trade unionists at the time sent in letters of support for Powell, Edward Heath, leader of the opposition Conservative Party, sacked Powell from the shadow cabinet. Miracles. 1.

Miracles

Concepts and Definitions The philosophical discussion of miracles has focused principally on the credibility of certain claims in the Jewish and Christian scriptures. But inquiry into the credibility of specific miracle claims inevitably raises questions regarding the concept of a miracle, and arguments regarding particular claims cannot be evaluated until the nature of that concept has been at least reasonably clarified. 1.1 Miracles as events that exceed the productive power of nature. BBC Radio 4 - In Our Time, Religion. Religious Sisterhood: Encounters of Gender. This ethnographic study focuses on the emergence of grassroot female interfaith initiatives, analysing the creative ways religious women negotiate their challenges and struggles as women of faith, together.

Religious Sisterhood: Encounters of Gender

Scholars of religion show that various religious groups are currently questioning the accepted norms, ideologies and practices that are accepted in their communities. These studies show how religious members struggle to integrate sacred texts and ways of life with contemporary ideals and practices. This scholarship has also revealed how women are expressing discontent with their one-dimensional gender roles and some are even clamouring openly for reform. Scholars have examined the emergence of egalitarian readings of traditional texts, legal issues in marriage and divorce, as well as historical re-readings of women's literary expressions and historical experiences. To gaze up at the empty niches in its eight projecting faces, which scholars believe once held statues of the Buddha, long since destroyed or plundered, was to be reminded of how powerful an absence this figure could leave. The image of the Buddha, with all its iterations, from India to Japan, variant yet somehow changeless, is so literally iconic that we forget that the business of giving a face, let alone a human face, to divinity is fraught with anxiety. The history of religious art, from Byzantine iconoclasm to Islam’s horror at representing any aspect of God’s creation, is replete with examples of how provocative such an act was. In the case of Buddhism, the provocation was twofold: Early Buddhists did not regard the Buddha as a divine being but a great teacher.
