Hacking the Brother KM-950i to Knit Multi-Colour Patterns – Heart of Pluto. I’ve previously discussed hacking the Brother KM-950i.
The major limitation to this work was the hack only supported two-colour patterns. That’s like having a black and white printer when what I really wanted was a colour printer! Two-colour patterns are quite simple. Each knit is represented in binary (0 or 1) for the two colours. So how could this possibly support multi-colour?
The Brother file format has never been fully reverse-engineered. Through trial and error I worked out what part of the header was storing height and width information. Just an aside: patterns use to be uploaded to the knitting machine by a specially designed in-built scanner that accepts mylar sheets. Rigid Heddle Loom by karlparanya. World class weaving solutions. OpenKnit is a 3D knitter that can create garments in just one hour. Designer Gerard Rubio has created an open source robotic loom that is able to knit entire seamless garments in less than one hour (+ movie).
Springing from Rubio’s own studies with 3D printing at Escolar Superior de Disseny in Barcelona, OpenKnit allows users to design and print their own garments seamlessly on one machine. The designer built OpenKnit completely from scratch, drawing up plans and putting it together as he went, following a trial and error process that took more than a year. "I started by learning how knitting machines work, to start figuring out how a seamless garment could be created automatically," Rubio told Dezeen. "Once I understood it would be possible to achieve, I started drawing the machine and building it at the same time. " A moving carriage guided by a sensor pulls threads across the machine above the hooks, which move up to grab them and pull them down to create stitches. Clothes. The ribbon : fabrickit. Weaving. Rigid Heddle Weaving: About the Rigid Heddle Loom. Anything that holds warp threads tightly is a loom.
The difference between looms is how the warp is held and how the sheds are created. A rigid heddle loom is, in effect, a frame loom. Generally, it has 4 sides (but not always--as in the case with the "EasyWeaver" by Harrisville Designs which only has warp beams). You can weave anything on a frame loom. Here's a nice video of Tim from New Voyager Trading telling us the difference between an RH loom and other types of looms. Although he says that an RH loom is limiting, this isn't necessarily true.
