The New $100MM BC Investment Fund - Alacrity Foundation Business Accelerator & Incubator. British Columbia’s provincial government recently announced a new BC Tech Strategy, focused on supporting the expanding tech sector.
The strategy has three main pillars: capital, talent, and markets. The first pillar is comprised of a BC Venture Capital Investment fund of $100MM that will be used to fill some of the need for access to investment for entrepreneurs and young startups in their initial stages. What Will the Fund Do? “With this fund we’re creating a stronger foundation for B.C.’s technology sector, which is a major employer in communities across the province, to shine on the global stage while creating well-paying jobs back at home for British Columbians.” said Premier Christy Clark when announcing the fund in December.
The BC Tech Fund aims to help promising tech companies in the province access Series A capital funding. The Capital Pillar of BC’s Tech Strategy Next to the fund, the capital pillar will continue to support a competitive tax system. The Talent and Markets Pillars. Fannin Innovation Studio. In addition to angel investing and other seed funding options, venture capital is attractive for new companies with limited operating history that are too small to raise capital in the public markets and have not reached the point where they are able to secure a bank loan or complete a debt offering.
In exchange for the high risk that venture capitalists assume by investing in smaller and less mature companies, venture capitalists usually get significant control over company decisions, in addition to a significant portion of the company's ownership (and consequently value). Venture capital is also associated with job creation (accounting for 2% of US GDP),[2] the knowledge economy, and used as a proxy measure of innovation within an economic sector or geography. Every year, there are nearly 2 million businesses created in the USA, and 600–800 get venture capital funding. History[edit] Origins of modern private equity[edit] J.H. This is an edited transcript of a recorded interview. I learned important lessons about money at a very early age. At 10, I moved into a homeless shelter after my father left my mother. I received a scholarship to attend a prestigious all-girls school. Once I realized that money was the key to an escape, I started reading books on consumer psychology. My sister lied and said I was 16.
