Urban bike-sharing programs are booming in many cities, but most casual riders don't usually tote around a helmet. This means when they rent a bike, they often ride helmet-free, which can be a risky move in places were roads aren't designed to safely accommodate both cars and cyclists. However, a novel design could make an affordable, collapsible, biodegradable helmet available from a curbside vending machine. The EcoHelmet, designed by Isis Shiffer, is made entirely of cardboard, folds up accordion-style to about the size of a banana and is compact enough to fit in a laptop bag. It unfolds to fit just like a traditional helmet, cushioning the wearer's head with honeycomb-patterned paper that absorbs and distributes impacts, protecting cyclists from injury.

[Top 10 Inventions that Changed the World] On Sept. 29, the James Dyson Foundation selected the EcoHelmet — along with 19 other designs — for the Dyson Engineers Shortlist. "It doesn't matter how functional it is," Shiffer said. Buy Jtek Engineering Jtek 11 Speed Bar End Shifter for Shimano Alfine SG-S700 Internal Hub from SJS Cycles, fast delivery for the UK - £99.99. CyclingAbout.com – Review: Hebie 695 Steering Stabiliser. The Hebie 695 is the first steering stabiliser I’ve ever used. I didn’t quite know what to expect when I unpacked it. I guess I had in my mind that a steering stabiliser would hold the front wheel straight when you lean your pannier-bag-laden bike up against something, but also that it would keep your wheel stabilised when you want to ride with no hands. In actual fact it does do both of these things but just not to the extent I envisaged – front pannier bags are too heavy to keep still.

A steering stabiliser creates a resistance in your steering to pull the front wheel to centre whenever possible. Essentially, there is no steering resistance when the wheel is straight, there is a little steering resistance when turning around sweeping corners (slight turns), and for slow speed manuvering (sharp turns) there is a lot of resistance. A steering stabiliser is good for two reasons: And secondly, the steering is smoother and lighter with lots of weight on the front end of the bike. Noise. "Oi" : The bike bell that doesn't look like a bike bell. by Knog.

We’ve designed a bicycle bell, Oi. We think it’s a bit different. We hope you like it. If you do, why not help us bring it to life? Bike bells have been domed since they were invented in 1877. We set out to design a totally new bell where form and function played an equal part. Knog is a bike accessory brand that is well know for its innovative design in bicycle lights and locks. We're designers first. The Oi bell's shape originates from its home - the handle bar. As with all our designs that reach this stage, we have applied for patent and registered the design.

Where bells usually protrude up or out, Oi doesn’t. We tested numerous prototypes to get the perfect pitch, length of ring, and volume. There are five styles. The bells fit on almost all cylindrical bars. After you pledge, we'll be in touch to ask for your choice of size. What about the handle-bar cables? What about getting it on the bar.
