How Carlsberg is revitalising its 'sleeping giants' Carlsberg is making actor Mads Mikkelsen the global face of the brand as it follows up the success of its Carlsberg Export rebrand with new strategies for ‘sleeping giants’ including Tetley.
The brewer launched the £15m Carlsberg Export rebrand, which included a new marketing campaign and product redesign, last year, and it claims the revamp has dramatically improved consumer perceptions and boosted sales. At a media briefing on Monday (26 March) the brewer revealed that the Export campaign drove sales across the on- and off-trade by 20% and has increased purchase consideration by 8% since its launch last April. According to Millward Brown data cited by Carlsberg, 71% of consumers agree that Export is ‘good to be seen drinking’ and over the past 12 months there has been a 4% uplift in the number of people who thought that the beer ‘tasted better’, despite the fact the recipe remains the same. CMOs are taking more marketing services in-house, according to a new study released by media and marketing consultancy NewBase (formerly Publicitas International).
“The Evolving Marketer” survey, released Wednesday, explores the marketing strategies of 120 CMOs and found that brands prefer to keep certain advertising elements close to the chest. Unsurprisingly, marketing strategy is performed in-house by 86 percent of CMOs. Likewise, 76 percent of survey respondents indicated that product marketing is performed in-house compared to 20 percent shared responsibility with an outside firm and five percent delegating out-of-house.
“There are some critical functions that need to remain in-house and require the day to day control and management of the marketing team, and these tend to relate to strategy, pricing, product and customers,” wrote NewBase in the survey. Behavioral science in business: Nudging, debiasing, and managing the irrational mind. Behavioral science has become a hot topic in companies and organizations trying to address the biases that drive day-to-day decisions and actions.
Although humans are known to be irrational, they are at least irrational in predictable ways. In this episode of the McKinsey Podcast, partner Julia Sperling, consultant Magdalena Smith, and consultant Anna Güntner speak with McKinsey Publishing’s Tim Dickson about how companies can use behavioral science to address unconscious bias and instincts and manage the irrational mind. Employing techniques such as “nudging” and different debiasing methods, executives can change people’s behavior—and have a positive effect on business—without restricting what people are able to do. Marketing ecosystems are creating new professional opportunities—and making new demands.
Here’s how today’s marketing leaders are adapting. Marketers are no strangers to managing complex relationships and campaigns. But as digital ecosystems (of vendors, platforms, agencies, business, etc.) expand and the lines between sectors blur, marketers are rethinking how to build value and their own roles. In our latest Discussions in Digital podcast, Brian Gregg, a senior partner who coleads the marketing service line, explores how marketing leaders can make ecosystems work for them.
Participating in the discussion are David Morgan, CEO of Simulmedia, Brian Goffman, vice president and senior solutions-group leader at McKinsey, and cohost Dianne Esber, who coleads McKinsey’s West Coast Consumer Tech practice.
