The database standardises these numbers in the form, for example: 1887,0708.2427 (year: comma: block of four numbers - usually representing a month and day: full-stop and final number). The final number can be of any length and may be followed by another full-stop and a sub-number. In some cases the same number is shared by two or more objects across departments.
In some of these cases a prefix has been added before a number (e.g. Planckoscope: Download. Below are the various tile-sets used in Planckoscope.
If you would like to run a local version, without requiring access to the internet, then you will need to download these. The source code can be downloaded from the Github respoitory. Each tile-set contains over 5000 images, archived and compressed into both tarballs (.tar.gz) and zip files. While the compressed archives are not too large (typically 10-50 MB), the uncompressed files can take up rather a large amount of space and take considerable time to extract. Most images should be credited ESA/Planck/C. The dust polarisation "texture" image should be credited to ESA/Planck/C. Eye burfi. Cosmigraphics: Picturing Space Through Time in 4,000 Years of Mapping the Universe.
Long before Galileo pioneered the telescope, antagonizing the church and unleashing a “hummingbird effect” of innovation, humanity had been busy cataloging the heavens through millennia of imaginative speculative maps of the cosmos.
We have always sought to make visible the invisible forces we long to understand, the mercy and miracle of existence, and nothing beckons to us with more intense allure than the majesty and mystery of the universe. Four millennia of that mesmerism-made-visible is what journalist, photographer, and astrovisualization scholar Michael Benson explores with great dedication and discernment in Cosmigraphics: Picturing Space Through Time (public library) — a pictorial catalog of our quest to order the cosmos and grasp our place in it, a sensemaking process defined by what Benson aptly calls our “gradually dawning, forever incomplete situational awareness.” Contemporary thought is endangered by the picture of nature drawn by science.

Views of the Universe The Emperor's Astronomy The "Emperor's Astronomy"(dedicated to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V) elegantly depicts the cosmos and heavens according to the 1400-year-old Ptolemaic system, which maintained that the sun revolved around the earth.

Please note that the images are of variable quality and that many of the captions are in need of update. A major overhaul is under way: the images themselves are being cleaned up, many hundreds of new ones are being added, and the captions are being systematically revised.* In the meantime they are offered here as a raw resource: please take them as you find them. Best Astronomical Images on the Web By Andrew Fraknoi (Foothill College) Version 3.1 (February 2010) One of the best things about astronomy these days is the abundance of fabulous images, both from telescopes on the ground and our many instruments in space.
Many of these images were produced with government funds and are not under copyright. Others are from university and nonprofit observatories, which often have liberal policies when it comes to educational uses. 1.
Photos. Sidério.
