How To Sew Liquid Metallic Looking Fabric. Tips and Tools For Creating Designer Doll Clothes. Measuring & Fitting Doll Clothes Patterns. NOTE: Book recommended for beginning sewers.
It contains a lot of basic sewing/fitting techniques, terms, basic fabric/thread information, hints on buying a sewing machine/serger, etc. The book is: "Mother Pletsch's Painless Sewing - Fourth Edition" and can be ordered on the Palmer/Pletsch website (click here). These notes are primarily aimed at measuring and fitting dolls. However, I have put in some references to human (and human pattern) measurements for comparison and to use when working with a human pattern to create a doll pattern ---- (see Pattern Creation Page). *NOTE: I will not be covering how to make pattern alterations for individual body differences as it would take an entire book! MEASUREMENTS - only part of the story! There is no doubt that taking accurate body measurements will get you a better fit - either for yourself or for a doll. You almost can't take too many measurements! 1. Dolls aren't always easy to measure. Bust Around the bust line, at the fullest part.
How To Transfer Doll Clothing Patterns. My favorite way to bust my fabric stash is making doll clothes.
Barbie clothes help get rid of even itty bitty pieces! But tiny paper pattern pieces get torn up quickly, especially if you use them often like I do. So to keep my patterns intact, I transfer them to poster board. First, I lay the pieces out on my copy machine… No need to cut them out, just a trim will do :) Doll patterns often have piece names and instructions outside the pattern piece. So cut the patten piece out, then use a glue stick to glue it to the poster board. If the piece is too small, or if its easier for you than glueing, just write the instructions on the back.
Preserving Doll Patterns. I have been going through some of my doll making patterns to see which ones need to be replaced and which ones are still usable.
This can be a tedious process, not the most fun aspect of doll making, but necessary. As anyone who has a favorite pattern will tell you, they get pretty ragged after awhile. If you only have a few patterns, replacing them is not a problem, but a collection like mine requires a lot of copying. Doll making, though, is not my only pattern collection; as a preschool teacher I also have an extensive collection of patterns for school. I quickly realized that my arts and crafts, shapes, and letter patterns would last a lot longer if they were heavier, or coated in plastic. The roll that I buy has a grid printed on the paper side so it's easy to measure how much I need. These patterns work perfectly for tracing paper shapes for school.
