Unit 3: Genetics - Mrs. Callister's 7th grade Science Class Website - (Private Browsing)

Quick Unit Summary A gene is a stretch of DNA that codes for a specific characteristic or physical trait. Organisms always have 2 copies of each gene- the one they inherited from their biological mother and the one they inherited from their biological father. Genes have varying levels of expression, referred to as dominant or recessive.

Strand of DNA Genes are often represented by using single letters. A person's genotype refers to the combination of genes he/she inherited. There are 3 categories of genotypes as shown below: heterozygous, homozygous dominant, and homozygous recessive. Unit 2: Genetics - 7th Grade Life Science - (Private Browsing) Monday: Learning about other ways that traits are inherited besides the simple dominant-recessive pattern.

Students will also be finishing their punnett square sheets from before break and trying out some punnett squares using their new knowledge of other inheritance patterns on the back of the notes. 7th grade Unit#7: Genetics - (Private Browsing) Mr. Schneider's 7th Grade Science Class. Marine Ecology Video Scavenger Hunt. Future Space Craft. The great explores who came to the new world in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries came on massive sail boats.

Future Space Craft

They could have paddled but that would have taken to long. Steam engines had not yet been invented, nor would they for along time, but this did not stop humankind. Rather than wait around for better things to be invented people used the powerful winds to carry them across the large unknown waters. Today we could set out on a long slow journey across the galaxy, but with current technology it would take us much to long to get anywhere. Much like the ancient explorers trying to reach the new world by paddling. We could wait around possibly centuries for better technologies such as a warp drive type device. Engineers and scientists are currently exploring the possibility of creating space ships with large wing like sails.

The larger the sail the faster the craft would be able to travel, if large enough it would be able to reach amazing speeds. TheBirdZooHome. Mapping Watersheds. 1.

Mapping Watersheds

Students locate a nearby river on a world map. Ask a volunteer to point to the area where students live on the World Physical Mapmaker Kit. Ask a different volunteer to use a blue marker to trace a nearby river or stream on the map along its path to the ocean. Have a third volunteer use a black marker to trace all of the streams and rivers that flow into that river. Explain that a smaller river or stream that flows into a larger river is called a tributary. 2. SuCCEss with ScienceAhead Teacher Resource Website. Seventh Grade Science Vocabulary. Seventh grade science is where students really need to put on their thinking caps and understand the subjects on a deeper level.

Seventh Grade Science Vocabulary

Learning science concepts can be easy and fun for seventh grade science students when they study their science vocabulary words by playing interactive online games. Students who learn the vocabulary that accompanies a specific subject are more likely to comprehend and excel in that subject. Space worksheet. What are conditions like in space. 'Hunger Games' Science: Investigating Genetically Engineered Organisms. Overview | What lessons can we learn about genetically engineered organisms from the example of the jabberjay, a fictional bird in the movie “The Hunger Games”?

'Hunger Games' Science: Investigating Genetically Engineered Organisms

In this lesson, students discuss the definition of genetically modified organisms, learn about the risks and benefits of research on G.M.O.’s, explore the growing do-it-yourself biology movement, and develop proposals seeking to either restrict or permit research into genetically modifying the avian flu virus. Materials | Computers with Internet access Warm-up | Before students arrive, write the following prompt on the board: In the movie “The Hunger Games,” the Capitol (a term used to refer to what we would call the government) produced genetically enhanced birds called jabberjays to spy on rebels.

Unexpectedly, these birds bred with mockingbirds, creating a new hybrid bird called the mockingjay. When students arrive, allow several minutes for them to reply individually to this prompt in their journals. 1. 2. 3.
