The MRGO and an outlet into Lake Borgne, approximately 50 miles (80 km) up the canal from its mouth and 15 miles (24 km) east of New Orleans The Mississippi River – Gulf Outlet Canal (abbreviated as MRGO or MR-GO) is a 76 mi (122 km) channel constructed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers at the direction of Congress in the mid-20th century that provided a shorter route between the Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans' inner harbor Industrial Canal via the Intracoastal Waterway.
In 2005, although disputed by the Corps of Engineers, the MRGO channelled Hurricane Katrina's storm surge into the heart of Greater New Orleans, contributing significantly to the subsequent multiple engineering failures experienced by the region's hurricane protection network. In the aftermath the channel was closed.[1] A permanent storm surge barrier was constructed in the MRGO in 2009, and the channel has been closed to maritime shipping.

(Profile views: 35) The band MrGO formed in New Orleans in 2006, when Steve Walkup joined as drummer with Marcus Bronson(bass/vocals) and Michael Pelias(singer/songwriter/guitar), formerly of Gramps.
The band name MrGO capitalizes on the bullshit politics of our time and place, referring to the MRGO canal which was created by corrupt corporate policies and which sent floodwaters directly into the city of New Orleans in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. The band’s intention is to play original electric and acoustic music, and create songs which speak of and to a damaged society, with the hope that there are still things worth doing in life that don’t involve world annihilation.
MrGO’s first studio record, “Vertical Features Remake Five”, released in 2009, contains 16 songs drawing on surf, psychedelic, and punkrock influences, with some acoustic nods to New Orleans groove.
